Easter baskets....do you store buy, or do you make your own for your kids?

Do you just buy those cellophane wrapped ones for your kids from whatever mega store is around, or do you create them one from scratch? I always got the store bought ones, except for one year, and that was my favorite year. For my son, my wife and i have been putting together stuff we pick up here and there. We want less emphasis on the candy, and more on the little toys and other things we find him. So far, instead of a chocolate bunny, we've got a hollow chocolate spongebob, a small soccer ball and football, some other small things. My mother in law picked up some stuff for it, but we're always interested in more ideas. What about you? what do you do?

Umm...Ihave seven kids...I don't make the baskets anymore. But I also celebrate Ostara instead of Easter...its a Pagan thing. :) Anyways, we have our celebration and they go outside to find real eggs, some plastic eggs I put jelly beans in, one chocolate bunny each, and then toys and tattoos. LOL Tattoos because they also come in a plastic egg. Which they absolutely love and my daughter has already put on seven...washed then off...and applied 4 more. LOL We are trying to talk her into doing her whole arm...but she is not going for it. ha ha

WalMart has some Sponge Bob Square Pants temp tattoos that come in an egg. :) My youngest seems to think that he can keep them there for a while. He is going to learn that come tomorrow night...they get washed off too. ha ha He will be upset too. But he will also know that he has more to put on the next weekend. Oh! And when my son was in a body cast, we put temp tattoos all over his cast and covered it with clear finger nail polish! It worked great and he loved it! :) So future reference, if you ever know someone with a cast, instead of signing it, put a temp tattoo on it and cover it with finger nail polish. :)

That's an awesome idea. Truly, i hope i don't have to do that with my son, but he's an active little boy..so..LOL that will probably come in handy. I'll have to look for those at walmart. I don't know if you can tell but we're big spongebob fans here. he would love that. it might be a fight to get him in the bath, but he'd enjoy them in the meantime. I will definitely look for those now, thanks!

LOL that's so funny. i knew with you having seven kids it would be interesting. But luckily it's just our one little boy here, although we'll send some stuff to our nephew back in arkansas, just because. We do real colored eggs, but this year also we picked up some nickelodeon ones that have little figurines of blue and spongebob in them. And your little girl with the tattoos is funny, or son got his first temp tattoo on halloween. You thought he might have been dying when we put it on him, but then he cried when it washed off in the bath that night. We might have to find some to put in his easter basket.

LOL that's what you have a sister for. For some reason there's this lady in this house that's awfully partial to you, and tends to pick stuff up. I hear she might not even make you get a picture sitting on some easter bunny's lap to get your basket. LOL

yeah, i think if we could con him into it, i would take the picture, and frame it, and place it in a spot of prominence in my house. LOL however, since i don't think we're going to be able to get him to do it, *sighs* well. It's always a good threat.

My wife is the more creative one, but we actually just buy the basket and fill it with things he'd like. we dont' actually decorate the basket itself. we just like giving him things that we know he'd like.

I always make my own. The store bought ones always seem to have a lot of crud in there. Like they'll have toys that will break easy, lots of cheap candy and tons of fluff aka easter grass or trash. Now I know my kids would like those anyway but it's more special for me to make themtheir own. I try to get one main good toy and then a few little things. I also don't put that much candy because I don't want to wind them up anymore then they will be on that special day. :)

We're the same way. We control pretty rigidly how much candy he gets, which is actually very little. The only thing we bend on are usually suckers, and he doesn't get many of those often either. But we'd rather he remembered the toys and egg hunting more than the stomache ache that would be sure to come later!

I always like to make up my daughter's Easter basket myself. I like to pick out the candy and maybe a little stuffed animal like a bunny or a chick. I like to get those plastic eggs and put little candies in them and hide them around the house for her to find while she's looking for her basket.

You hide the basket too? that's really awesome, making it into something similiar to a treasure hunt...that's a really good idea. I've thought about it for birthday gifts..but that's really good, too.

Well I have bought the baskets already made and I have bought the stuff to do it with it gets expensive that way but it is worth it so that you may know what is all in the basket for youre own kid and that way you can put as much things in it that you want the child to have instead of just a little bit of candy and a toy.

yeah, it was actually a lot more expensive for us this year to put together a basket than to just buy one from the store. but i like personalizing it, and knowing exactly what he's getting, and now wondering how much is filler. Plus, we have a good time putting it together. LOL

I have always made my sons basket. I stay away from the candy and buy something that he has been asking for ($15 or less) and healthy snacks that I know he likes.

We stay away from the candy also. all he's getting for that this year are the hollow little spongebob's, and my mother in law got him some little candy's shaped like crabby patties. LOL but we like to personalize it. We picked up some grass for the basket today, and after that i think we're calling it done. LOL

This will be my daughters first Easter. We made her basket ourselves. Every year I'm going to make it myself. That way they're more personalized and it's fun doing it! Happy Easter!

we enjoy picking up stuff for our son, here and there too. stuff that we know he'll enjoy, and plus, we can control the intake of candy that way. LOL

We usually store buy one or two chocolate items and add a keepsake like an egg cup to the children's easter morning gifts. It is nice to have something left over once the chocolate is all gone!

LOL that's the truth. something to play with to wear them out after the sugar high has hit. LOL It's nice to have memento's left over to remind you of that day.

I have never bought the store baskets, and growing up the store bought baskets were a lore more rare than they are now. For my daughter we buy candy here and there, but I liked to focus on fun spring activities too, like bubbles, jump ropes, sidewalk chalk, etc. My daughter loves it because I get specialized things like that, like a bunny wand for bubbles, or egg shaped sidewalk chalk.

That's what my mother in law found, similiar things. She's gotten him some sidewalk chalk, more crayons and modeling clay, and glittery glue for inside activites on rainy days. We got him some sports balls that will fit into his four year old hands, and, LOL, uhm. There's some other stuff...

I never got the store bought ones for Easter so my girls won't either. This year the Easter Bunny is bringing a homemade pillow, small stuffed animal, tiny amount of candy, Jenniffer gets a cadburry egg because she is 2 and that is the minimum age for those in my book, and a book for each of them. We are also going to dye eggs and hide them around the house.

LOL we do the dyed eggs, definitely. But this year we've actually picked up quite a bit because we picked up stuff and then my mother in law picked up a bunch of stuff. But this is all activity things, like crayons and chalk, little paints and modeling clay. We got him some smaller sports balls magnetic alphabet and numbers and things like that.

When i was young, we used to leave the empty basket out which only had shredded paper in the bottom & when we'd wake in the morning here would be choccie eggs, rabbits whatever else in there. Plus there would be an outdoor egg hunt too! This year is my daughter's first Easter so we will get her just 1 or 2 chocolate eggs etc but we're getting her a Giant Beanie Kid dressed as a rabbit, she'll also get a solid candy egg (the kind that lasts forever - i think they're made of Marzipan (sp?) or something) & a new outfit! My parents have gotten her 1 chocolate rabbit to eat & a big soft toy rabbit! We'll put her basket with shavings in it, out on the eve of Easter & then when she's in bed, we'll put her things in there!

i think that's a great idea, to leave the empty basket and then wake up to it being full the next morning. I think when kids are so small like that, that the first holidays are really for the parents, and the prepping the kids for holidays they'll remember.

I make my own. I go to the dollar store and buy a cute little basket and pick and choose candies and chocolates, a cute stuffed animal and some small pens, pencils and mini activity books to fill it in. I too try to stay away from too much candies. The dollar stores have different items that are very cute and very cost effective if you have several kids to plan for! I also find this to be more personal and fun for everyone, rather than buying the impersonal pre-wrapped baskets at the mega stores.

We LOVE the dollar store. LOL and we only have one to plan for. But we went the other day and picked up some coloring tablets for him, and a kite, and things that he really likes. Actually my mother in law came up with the coupe de grace today, she raises rabbits, and the baby bunnies are just about the right age to be taken away from mamma, she's going to bring one down on easter and have it in a basket for him to pet, and then it's going back to mammaw's house, so mammaw can take care of it for him. LOL Ah, i can see the glee in my wife's eyes at the photo oppurtunities.

We're the same way. We like to know exactly what's going in the basket, which is a lot less candy than store bought. I'd hate to buy him one of those only to take all the candy away.
