Sibling rivalry. How close is your relationship with brothers and sister?

I've got 3 sisters/half sisters/step siblings, whatever. There's a lot of them. And i don't talk to ANY of them anymore, i don't have anything in common with them, and no interests together. And that's not really a big deal for me. But my wife and her brother are incredibly close, they're like on the same wavelength a lot of times. Weird sense of humor, a lot of the same views on life, and a lot of compassion for each other. This is amazing to me, and I envy it a little. They're brother and sister, but they're best friends too, even 700 miles apart. How about you? how's your relationship with you're siblings?

My relationship with my siblings is good (as far as I know LOL). My twin sister is my best friend and we keep in touch by email and phone at least twice a month (most of my family live in New Zealand). I also have 3 brothers and we were always close as we were growing up, but now we are scattered all around the place but still keep in touch via email and texting. If we can, we get together at christmas or boxing day at my sisters place and its a lot of fun. We often sit around talking about the old days, laughing and joking around too. I do miss them from time to time especially during the holidays. I also have two sister in laws and they are like friends to me.

LOL, it's okay. sometimes weird things happen on mylot. I've posted the same discussion twice and not been able to figure out how...
But you're very lucky with your family. It's been my experience that once kids are out of the nest, they don't stay close with each other. I hope you enjoy those relationships with your family, and treasure them. They're not as common as it seems.

I'm not that close to all my siblings. I am one of eight children...but not all from the same marriage or parent. Odd statement...I know.
My mother had a child before my father. My father was married 4 times...and I was the baby of all the children.
So, I didn't grow up with all my siblings.
The one I am closest to relationship wise is my sister in West Palm Beach.
For the most part, we grew up together. But we are nothing alike...we are like night and day! LOL But we are still close and call each other often.
I really don't know my other siblings well from my father's other marriages.
They all grew up in Michigan. So...it was distance and different mothers that caused us from not knowing one another.
But I talk to one of my sisters through email from time to time.
Occasionally, one of my brothers will email me.
I have another brother in jail that we write back and forth to.
And a brother that I knew more of growing up...but since he is the baby sitter that put my baby Noah in the hospital...I have not talked to him for 3 years. Nor do I think I will ever talk to him again since he almost killed my son.
HOWEVER...I think siblings should be close. So, I teach my children that even when they grow up, they will still need each other and will have to lean on each other when mom is no longer around. I hope my children keep a close bond with each other. Family is very important.

My dad is on wife number five. and now i'm feeling weird because i forgot when i posted this that i have 3 new stepbrothers and a new stepsister. i've never laid eyes on any of them, or the new stepmom. LOL yeah. so i understand what you mean about not growing up close to your siblings, and not even really knowing them. I was close to one sister when i was little but she grew up to be just like my mother who i detest with a serious passion. And i don't know if you noticed in the other discussion, but did i mention they would have had to have pried me off the body of anyone that hurt my son?

The last time I have visually seen that brother of mine, was the day that I drove there to see my son and call 911. My son was my focus. And trust me...if I were to ever see him face to face again...I better have a jury filled with people like you. Hence, we moved 3,000 miles away.

I think it's a very good thing you moved. And i can't blame you for your son being the focus, as mine is the focus of my life. I would do anything to protect him, including moving three thousand miles away, so kudos to you for being a good mother to your children!

I am the oldest of 4. It has gotten better as we got older. I used to fight with my brother al of the time. I never fought with my sisters really. I talk to all of them on the phone. I see my brother when I can even though it is only about once a year. He knows I love him & his family though. I see my sisters more often & they usually spend about a week with me in the summer.

That's the way that i am with my siblings. i have absolutely nothing in common with them, and it's more than that, our beliefs in everything differ so there's no chance of trying to find any middle ground. I tell my wife over and over how lucky she and her brother are in the relationship they have with each other. They're more best friends than siblings, even being several hundred miles apart.

I would have to say that my sister has been one of my best friends since I was about 14. We went through some tough times, but in the end, not only do we get along well, it is easy to talk to each other about anything. To me, that is waht siblings are for.

You're lucky. I happen to know that your sister feels the same way about you. LOL But i don't really get along with anyone in my family. I'm close to my dad, but he's not nearly the influence on me he used to be, which is probably a good thing. And i have that closeness with my wife, but i envy her those good memories she has of her brother. (ahem) She taught me how important family really is, and how much it can mean.
