that is a really good post shomomo and it is really difficult to answer in the old days people believed that there is a god for every nature reaction, this is where it all began. people worshiped alote of gods according to the problems they had or wishes they had. people in Egypt believed in all those gods. by that time the Judaism started to take control, it all began with the old testament and the story of abraham that was the first person that believed in one god.

A trick question! I say so because there are still people who worship various gods rather than one. *Ahem* Splitting hairs aside, I'd have to say that monotheism really took the hold (in the West at least, well Europe then the New World) when the Roman Empire adopted Christianity as it's official Religion. Though the idea of 'One God' did exist before Christ. For example, the Jewish faith. Also, in polythsist religions like the Ancient Greeks, certain philosophers did question and talk about one god rather than many though they often saw the pantheon as an extension of one god.

there's still a lot of Polytheists about. I'm a sort of combination of Duotheist and Pantheist.

I found this link http://www.messagenet.com/myths/neomyth.html . I think that believing in one God rather than many Gods happens right after Jesus started to teach about the Kingdom of God and it begun to spreadout through his disciples who gone everywhere to teach after Jesus' accomplishment of His mission.

It's a gradual process, not all civilizations have adopted the belief on one god. I think it's an evolution of the reasoning in the human kind. Primitive tribes and civilizations workshipped many gods, but their gods where personalizations of phenomenons that they didn't understand, like rain, sun, seasons, earthquakes, among others. Later they abstract those "gods" giving them more human-like qualities, like compassion, jealousy, arrogance... it's very easy to perceive those qualities in the stories of the greek/roman mythology.
