Do you know what your cat food tastes like?

I always wondered if my Purina Cat Chow actually tasted as good as they say it does. How do they figure out if cats really like it? Look at my cat for instance. My cat would eat out of the garbage if I left the door open to the trash can. It doesn't seem like that cat has a specific taste or appetite in my mind. Am I wrong here? Do they actually have people that taste the food and see if it tasts like real fish or liver? Where do they come up with this information? All I know is that my cat eats WAY to much of just about anything that I give her, so why should I pay more for food that we have no idea what it tastes like? Even if they have fish shaped kibble, etc. Have you ever thought about this before?

well okay, this is really embarrassing but I'v tasted it...hehehehe yes I'm normal but just very curious. This was of course when I was much younger, many many many years ago. Anyways, to me it tasted friggin terrible and metallic. I don't know who makes that crap but if cats like it (which they do) their taste buds must be completely different from ours. Yes it smells like fish and all that but it tastes like a tin can with terrible texture. Just thinking of it makes me want to puke.

I had to give you a best response simply for tasting the cat food. I too have eaten pet food, but only dog treats...They taste terrible too. I think it is something my buddies and I were thinking about around a game of poker...Poker, Bud LIght, and dog treats do not mix.

Thanks for the best response, and I'm glad that you admitted to trying dog treats too. Now I don't feel so embarrassed.

No, I have not tasted it, but my brother in law tastes it everytime he comes over lol, he is just crazy and wants a laugh, but he actually goes and gets biscuits and chews and swallows them, (yuck). But I think cats do have different tastes like us, because one of my cats likes only fish flavoured foods, whereas the other one likes vegetables and chicken.

I haven't tasted the food and I can't say I ever would. I don't think I would like the taste since it is suppose to be geared towards a cats taste buds - not a humans. I believe they actually test the food on cats to see what they prefer. If your cat eats too much, have you thought about changing his/her food? Some foods are like junk food to cats and they will just eat and eat (normally these have meat by products in them). Most of the time can tell when you buy one of these because they smell really bad and usually have a higher fat or oil content. The only Purina product I have any experience with is the new Naturals. That has no by products and quite a bit of greens. We had thought of switching to it because our male cat does not eat a lot of greens, but the fat content was too high and it smelled really funky.

Cat having dinner! - Cat with a big fish on the table.
Well I have never eaten cat food I know what it smells like so I do not think I would want to eat it. But have you ever noticed how cats like stinky things like dirty socks so I guess they would like the taste of cat food. They must test it on cats I would hope it was not people testing it. Mind you it is probably better for us then a lot of stuff that we eat.
