Did you ever think about taking the change out of your pocket at the end of the day and putting it in a jar or piggybank? You would be surprised how fast this kind of change can add up. Not only to pennies accumulate faster than you would expect, but here in Canada, for example, where the one and two dollar denominations are now in coin, it can really boost the total of change in your pocket. You can save up fifty or a hundred dollars quite a bit faster than you ever imagined.

That works fine unless you have kids in the house. Mine are always tapping into my change jar. It never gets the chance to build up

yep your right you can save up quite a bit think about it, 50c per day is allot of money that's 15$ per month and imagine if you saved even more then that per day I once had a jar with 250$ in it quarters nickles dimes, and everything else I cashed it in at the bank and felt rich for a few days.
take care

You are right, it does add up very quickly. I am always amazed that people just toss pennies as if they are nothing but if you have a hundred of them you have a dollar. Here in Nicaragua I was stunned when a little girl saw a coin on the ground and picked it up. I thought she was going to keep it because she is very, very poor. Instead of putting it in her pocket she tossed it as far as she could throw it. I mentioned it to my Nicaraguan husband and he said it is common for people here to throw away such coins thinking it is of little value. My husband isn't that way and I was stunned that adults were teaching their children to toss such coins away instead of keeping them to add together. My dad always said, "A penny saved is a penny earned."

My sister got my dad this very big bank for Christmas one year, to put his change into. He alsways has pocket change. So for six months, every night when he was home for good, he'd empty his change into that bank. (This was last year) He thought he'd use the money for a summer vacation with my mom. After 6 months he took it to a bank and the bank gave him the amount he had accumulated - $436.

you are absoluely right buddy.pocket change can really accumulate and you may never know the surprise it can give you at the end.i used to do this as a kid but i dont do it anymore but this is a really an effective way of saving up money.the change should be kept off in a seperate place and at maybe at the end of the month or when your piggy bank is full you can treat yourself for all the money you have saved.and you are absolutely right buddy the speed at which it accumulates can really surprise us all.so start saving up the loose change fellow mylotters.:-)

Yes, I agree with you and they really accumulate fast. I used to have a metal container with no opening other than a small hole to drop the coin into and when I sawed it open after a few months, they're a lot, real lot. It's nice to have something really sealed that will not be tempting to get to purchase small things specially when there are kids around.

You talk about the spare change I will tell you a good story my mother saves every coin and puts them in different containers a couple of years ago me and my kids and my neice and nephews and of course my mom went to Florida with all the change that she saved up and it turned out to be atleast a thousand dollarz so yes saving up all the change really helps we save up all our pennies and take them to coin star when we get a bucket full it put $10. in gas for me to see my brother.

I save up small change and use it to buy my drinks from the drink machine at work! It's good because then I do not really feel like I am "buying" them for some reason. Also my dad gives me his small change and I use this too - he can't be bothered to keep it as it's heavy in his pocket - so they are really free drinks.
I used to save the money up and take it to the bank to be converted into notes, which I donated to charity. At the moment I need the money too much to do that unfortunately.

We have also 1 and 2 euro coins so it can make good amount of money fairly quickly. Nowadays use mainly cards, so don't have change usually at all. If i spot even 5 cents on a street, I sure pick it up. Not that I would be so greedy but maybe little bit superstitious.

When my husband quit smoking years ago, he put his "Smoke Money" aside. The equivalent of a pack every two days. At the end of six months he had enough to buy the camera lens he wanted.

I love how here in Canada they have the toonie and loonie! That way your change really does get big quite quickly. In one week I managed to get 20 dollars just in change!

I do this every night. I take the quarters and set them aside for my kids lunch money, but the other coins go into a piggy bank. When we take a vacation, this money gets counted out and it is used for vacations.

Regarding pocket change--actually one month, I believe last October I did this for an experiment.
Also in Canada but not wanting to salvage my toonies & loonies, I just saved the rest of the coins--I still saved almost $80!! in one month!!
So its amazing what you can save if you try!
