Quitting smoking- The toughest challenge

India

After my last relationship went bad, I went into deep depression and started smoking. While it started as a couple of cigarettes a day, it blew up into a two pack a day habit. I used to be an amateur cyclist with ambitions of going professional, but my smoking put paid to all that. So much so that I cannot climb a long flight of stairs without going completely out of breath. I have had enough and I'm trying to quit smoking for good now. I have tried to quit a couple of times before, but it has never lasted for more than a couple of days, but this time around, I'm serious about quitting. Do you have any tips that could help me or know anyone who quit smoking successfully? I could definitely use such info. Thanks tons!

i share your problem:-). i tried to quit it but couldn't manage beyond a week or so. but the reason back then was that, i still have the power to quit so let's continue. it never happened that i was unable to live without it. the day i now that it has overpowered me, may be only then i will try quitting for good. but you are right, it does sucks up your prowess and breathing capability as well as your strength. may be i have been too diplomatic about myself, reassuring that i can quit whenever i want, may be i am wrong in it but i am happy that you have decided to quit, so best of luck.

The single biggest motivation for me to quit smoking entirely is bicycling. I want to regain the kind of fitness I possessed earlier. Smoking has taken a heavy toll on me, but I hope at least some of the ill effects can be reversed. For the rest, the least I can do is not smoke anymore. All the best to you too, for quitting smoking!

It's a good thing that you've decided that you want to quit smoking. I'm pretty sure that at this point you are already very concern of your health as well as the people around you, especially your love ones. I've heard from friends that when you've decided to quit smoking you have to do it step by step. Like, if before you were able to take 5 sticks a day, now you take only 3 sticks a day, and so on and so forth. Until you can live the day without smoking. Of course, there are symptoms but just try to be patient, it's for your own good. Just my two cents.

Congrats for quitting smoking. To stay away from that permanently, you need to be mentally strong and physically active. Well! You shall try early morning walk for about 40 minutes daily (from 5:30am to 6:10am). You would definitely realise how blissful is that morning freshness and make you feel how fallacious is the assumed gratification of smoking. Infact, you continue this morning walk for a week and I am sure you would get addicted to this (walk)! Further, morning walk is good for general health as well (to reduce high BP, diabetics, etc.). So, please try morning walk and get ADDICTED (!) to that to keep yourself from smoking.

You could try chewing gum instead of smoking. You could also try the patch or throat lozanges. That might help as well.

I agree with you quiting smoking is very hard. I've tried many approaches on how to quit but honestly, up to now, I'm still smoking. :c I believe those smokers who successfully quit smoking are those who people who has great desire to stop their smoking habit. Currently, I believe in the saying that "Smokers never quit, they only stop".

Hi there. Yes, you are completely right. It is very hard to quit smoking absolutely because the addiction of nicotines. I had heard that many people do quit smoking in a period if there are no others smoke in the front of him, but he can't resist smoking again when he sees that some people smoke.

Mark Twain once said, "Quitting smoking is the easiest thing in the world; I've done it hundreds of times." My mom has tried several times and only finally did a couple years ago. She always quit cold turkey and said day 14 was the hardest. She started cross-stitching (keep the hands busy) and chewing gum, and also started snacking more. I've heard that for some people drinking caffeine will help fend off the nicotine withdrawal, but it varies. Good luck!
