Have you ever fought off an attacker?

I have and so has my roommate. I was a freshman in college when an older guy got me intoxicated then tried, with the help of another man, to carry me away from the dorm because I didn't want to go. I kicked the other guy in the stomach (and he was huge so it was an easy target.) I had relaxed my body so I had hung down, then brought up my knees & sunk my feet in his stomach - one of my shoes literally popped out after my foot came out. He dropped me & I tried to elbow the other guy in his privetes but got his upper thigh instead. But with my weight suddenly increased by the other one dropping me, he lost his grip. I picked up my shoe on my way up and started beating him around his head, neck & shoulders with the heel, no doubt screaming nasty words at him. I got back to the dorm safely. I was 18, but I had been riding horses for 8 years & knew if I could beat up a horse, I could kick the s**t out of a guy. Flash forward a few years (well, the roomie is 8 years younger than I am!) When she was about 21 she was going to work and walking down to the bus stop to catch the bus when a big, black man grabbed her from behind. The next thing she remembered was the guy laying on the ground crying. She went & called the police. They came up & asked what was wrong with her "boyfriend." She replied that he wasn't her boyfriend. They then asked her what she hit him with, she held up her blind stick - one of those "folding" ones, folded in half, of rolled aluminum. They told her to put it on the ground. An ambulance came & took him to the hospital & she went on to work (one of the police men also acted as security at the hotel she worked at.) After the guy was releiced to the jail, he was telling the other inmates that the police had beaten him up. The police brought in the news artical that proved that he was beaten up by a "fat, blind, white woman." Oh, FYI, she broke both bones in his lower right arm, cracked 2 ribs, broke his collar bone, dented his skull and ruptured his testical (the other one also had to be removed.) Besides the assalt on her, they were able to pin 4 rapes on him as well. Last heard, he was still behind bars 25 years later - hope he's enjoying himself!

I have had a couple of run ins with strangers. On one occassion I was still in high school and had the sort of hair that tended to get me a lot of negative attention. This guy, who had already graduated and shouldn't even have been on the campus, was apparently there to meet a friend and started giving me a load of grief about my hair. I made some off hand disparaging remark about his manhood and I guess it was a much bigger deal to him then it was to me! All of this happened between 5th and 6th period, and I went on my way to my next class, which happened to be PE. Unfortunately for me, the class was told to run laps around the school, which took us thorugh the front parking lot where the guy still happened to be parked. Now, if you can imagine this! It was 1 in the afternoon, on a very busy road. It was right in the driveway of the administration building which was full of people and had plate glass windows looking onto the parking lot. The guy (who was wrestler like burly and in retrospect probably on speed) was outraged when he saw me and told me he was going to show me what a man was. He lunged at me and grabbed my arms, and tried to drag me into his car. I was with a group of half a dozen girls, all of whom were so stunned not one of them made a move to help me. His passenger had already arrived and I vaguely heard him telling Crazy Guy that it was a bad idea and to stop it. I guess instinct took over, because I stamped on his foot, kicked him in the shin, and shoved him away from me as hard as I could, then danced back out of reach. I guess there were enough people beginning to gather at that point or he wised up, because he hopped in his car and took off. He was spitting mad and making threats and shouting all sorts of abuse as he left. The sad thing was, nothing happened. I didn't report it Other then to my boyfriend at the time who went looking for him), and was so used to getting garbage over my mohawk, I didn't really think too much ot it. I was more shocked at how my friends had frozen like scared little rabbits, and if it had been them, he WOULD have dragged them into the car.

Isn't that the truth - except that you would've probably jumped tho THEIR defence. Obviously you weren't a scared rabbit or you wouldn't have had the mohawk in the first place. I did the "tail" thing back in the '90's, but I've never been so out there to do anything that bold with my hair. I always wanted to dissappear rather than stand out - well, later I stood out - or I wouldn't have gotten that black cape!

It really mystefied me why anyone could care less what I did with my hair. It was such a huge deal though, people would get completely worked up about it. I think it would drive them mad when they would ask about my parents being upset, or say their parents would throw them out if they ever did anything like that and I would have to tell them, honestly, my parents didn't mind one little bit. They just couldn't comprehend being given that freedom of expression.

I am so fortunate that I have never been attacked in my life and never hit by my husband or any boyfriend that I have ever had. I see all the abuse that goes in relationship all around me and I consider myself lucky. You are a really spunky girl and I admire you for your courage.

Courage - crazy is the term most people that know me call me! I've stepped into cases where I've seen guys messing with women, boy do they back off when they threaten to hit you & you DARE them so you can call the cops & put their a$$ in JAIL. They're used to their intimidated girlfriends that will back off, not a crazy B*tch that WANTS to put them in jail.

Some times it takes one bully seeing another person bullied to come around and stop. I'm glad you mended you ways.

Wow, that's frightening! Last time I was involved in anything close to a fight, was in high school, and no one was ever in danger of serious injury. I'm thinking about taking some Kajukenbo at some point though. Thanks for sharing.

My bro had a friend who was a few grades above him. He was a longhaired kid before the term "hippie" evolved. He was going to a highschool with a lot of kids we called "cedar wackers" went. He was out on the track when 4 of the cedar wackers attacked him. The coach saw them coming, got the dean of boys & the vice principal to go with him to help the long haired kid since they were having a problem with the cedar wackers beating up the long haired boys badly. By the time they got halfway across the track they saw bodies flying. 2 of the cedar wackers were hospitlized, the other 2 were treated & relieced. They couldn't punish this friend because they knew he didn't start it, but suddenly, all the long haired kids at that school started taking karate!
