What kind of cook are you? Do you measure every ingredient?

Or just like me, do you just dip your fine fingers in the jar of salt or pepper and sprinkle them on?

my mom always asked me how much do i put this thing and that thing in my cooking. I just can't answer her as i am not using anything to measure those thing. it is happen just like that. I am very seldom to measure anything for cooking or baking. I just put them like that, and amazingly, they taste nicely and most peoples asked me how i make them. sometimes i think it is because you have been in the kitchen for some period so you automatically get this skill and it wouldn't happend after a day you start to enter the kitchen.

Before I start getting good at cooking, I didn't pass through any measuring. And the taste just gets better and better. Thanks for that, quoniq!

Measuring? That's for sissies and beginners! I'll measure when the children are watching or if I'm making rice...but other than that, I'll eyeball the amount and dump it in. It's all good.

I don't measure anything. And I don't sprinkly either.. I dump.. LOL.. I go by taste. And I'm a good one for tasting. Usually by the time a meal is done, I'm already working on being full because I've had a little taste of this to see how it's working and a little taste of that.. and then another taste of this to make sure that I've got what it needs in it.. LOL..

ha ha. That's what I did during early learning in cooking. I put a little of this ingredient then taste, if unsatisfied, I put a little again until I reached the desired taste, or when I get full and disgusted by keeping on tasting and decided to put off the fire.

I only measure if it's the type of recipe that needs precise ratios of ingredients to turn out properly, like bread or a souffle. With most cooking I just toss in spices, adding whatever I feel like until it turns out how I want! Most baking requires fairly accurate measuring, while cooking lets you play with your spices and ingredients much more. I rarely follow recipes, I have tons of recipe books, but I use them more for inspiration, then combine and make up my own new dishes.

With salt and pepper I just sprinkle them but with other ingredients I try to follow the recipe as I like to try and get it tasting as the recipe intended, but once I've made it a few times I play around with the measures of herbs and spices till it's to my taste.

That's good. There are cases when even if we follow the directions we don't like the taste of the food. So we play with the ingredients and might try to add more that's not even in the list. Pepper is almost always present in our dishes.

Measure? Only once and awhile....I'm a self-proclaimed "dumper"...lol, except in baking, when I tend to measure more frequently.

It's because baking requires the softness of the dough as a result, for example, right songbirdnaimh?

I think cooking by measuring all the ingredients would only put more pressure on us, because for me, this depends on what type of taste we are looking for in our recipes. I believe that it's much better to cook and vary our recipes to our own preferrence, this way, we can add some of whatever we think lacks in taste. I love to cook foods in moderation, and I use alot of spices to preserve the meals that I cook.

I’m just new when it comes to cooking so I heavily rely on cookbooks to prepare for a meal. So I always follow everything and I always measure every ingredient just to be sure that I’m doing the right thing and won’t ruin whatever I’m cooking.

when it comes to cooking I think I am a little more free form. Recipes are usually just guidlines or idea. I rarely measure spices and such. My food usually comes out great, which is good. My mom cooked the same way so I guess I just learned from her. I am not as comfortable with baking so I follow measurement much more closely. I feel like baking is a little more tepremental, at least when I am doing it. I am more likely to screw up baking than I am cooking. My sister however is a great baker and I think is a little more free form with it.

Ah, baking. You are right. That requires measurement. Unlike in cooking, baking requires perfect softness for breads and cakes, and enough sweetness to enjoy the cookie.

That's interesting to know, aweins. You measure some and you use fingers for another. Funny and interesting. Thanks.

I measure every ingredient... My mom never taught how to cook so I relied on cookbooks and because of this I've always measured the ingredients..

Try playing with it, chengbeb. You will never see cooking the same way again.
