How do I get that Onion Smell off my Hands?

I love onions in a alot my foods I prepare, however, I hate when I have to cut up onions because I can never seem to get that onion smell off my hands. It seems to just follow me everywhere I go and because I smell it, if I'm around people, I'm always thinking they smell it too, which could possibly be embarrassing. I find myself washing my hands over and over and still have that smell on my fingertips. I've heard to dry baking soda, but that does not work. What could I use on my hands to get that onion smell off them? I don't want to have to use gloves. lol

The only thing I can think off would be to rince your hands with warm water and lemon juice. The citrus should mask the onion smell and also clear the smell from the air too.

I have also found lemon juice to work the best, when I have it. Maybe that is why I dont cut onions too much.

I don't remember where I heard it, but I sprinkle salt on my hands (like you'd do with food!) and rub them together before washing them with ordinary soap. Works everytime, for onions and garlic. :)

I cook a lot and I love onions. So it behooves to say, that I encounter the same problem that you have. I usually use lemon juice to remove the onion smell from my hands. I would either cut a fresh lemon and squeeze its juice into my hand. I would also use the lemon to freshen my sink by running it through the garbage disposal. I also keep a kind of hand soap that is highly lemony in scent in the kitchen. There is something about lemons that mask strange smells like onions, vinegars and fish. I hope this helps. Happy cooking!

I hate that!I use to have that problem all the time until a few years ago, while watching a cooking show they were talking about the smell and 'tear' affects of onions, the person doing the cooking said she never has that problem because she puts the onions in the freezer for about 1/2 an hour before using them.....I tried it and guess what?No tears or smell.....Now I do this all the time

well at first I had the same problem as you...now I always wear my gloves when I have to use either onions or garlic when preparing my dishes...I hate having these bad smells on my hands..I have tried with soap, lemon juice and many other things...but now I have my gloves for cooking...I use the same kind of gloves I use when being at work..I am a doctor and I use the same surgery gloves I use at work..if I can feel comfortable with it at work why don't profit from them at home? I have no smell on my hands now!!!try it and tell me what you think about this idea!!

please try this To get rid of onion, pepper or garlic smells from hands, mix two level tablespoons of baking soda to a glass of water and soak hands for 30 seconds to a minute. Also great for getting rid of these smells/burning from mouth (but just rinse, don't swallow!).

I sure will, thank you for your response. I was thinking that was my only way of getting the onion smell off my hands was just to wear gloves.

I have had the same problem! The only thing I know of is to use a strong, but gentle, cleaner like Vim. Gasoline does the trick, but then you are left with a smell as bad or worse. Onion is a difficult smell to deal with, but a strong cleaner should do it.

fresh lime juice or vinegar or tomato pulp: either of these works great. before cutting onions you can smear butter or oily stuff and once you finish scrub the lime skin for a while and finally rinse your palms with lemon juice. oily hands make it difficult to cut onions, however, it works wonders. if you cant manage with oil, you can skip that part, as i do. hope this helps.

Oh the vinegar is definetly a new one. But, I don't care for the vinegary smell. The lemon is definetly a good smell

I hate that smell too, lol. Try this...squirt a small amount of lemon juice into your hands, and maybe a teaspoon salt. That should take care of the smell for you. I dont know why it seems to work, but it does. Take care.

If you are cutting onions and get the smell on your hands and no amount of washing seems to help, try this tip: The easy way to remove the onion odor is to rub your hands on your stainless steel sink. Then wash them. No more onion odor!" And... for those of you who don't have a stainless steel sink, try using a stainless steel butter knife! Bye bye stinky hands! Try it out and let me know if it works.

I love this question. The answer is take a silver spoon, run cold water, rub your hands together with the spoon in between the palms of yours hands under the cold running water. This will remove the onion stench from your hands. Try it. I do it all the time. I've been using this method for years and it works for me.

I've also been told that vinegar helps but then you may end up smelling like a french fry LOL I do know first hand if you're painting if you put out little dishes of vinegar it sucks up the smell real well. I do it all the time.

Just rub your hands on some stainless steel. You can use a spoon or a bar that they make especially for this purpose. I do it under running water.

'Silver' coins have already been suggested, but here in the UK we use a small piece of steel. Some specialist cooking shops sell them - alternatively, use something like a steel teaspoon or even some unused steel wool, but be careful with the latter as it's rather scratchy! :-) If you can get a small piece of steel, wash your hands with it instead of using soap. I have no idea HOW it works, but it does seem to. The other thing I do is to 'top and tail' the onion before you chop it, and remove the parts of the onion that correspond to the root and the 'shoot' end. I've found that this also reduces the 'cry factor' considerably. Also take off the skin and one 'layer' of the onion before you start chopping, and again - chop with a clean, sharp, steel knife. After chopping, wash hands immediately in cold water. Another thing to watch for - or maybe this is just MY partcular problem - is that about 12 hours after I've eaten any dish with cooked onions in them I have a strong (and pretty 'orrible) smell coming out from the pores in the palms of my hand. This smell continues in my sweat for a few hours - rarely more than 6 hours - but it is pretty yukkie. Best of luck!

So far I've tried sea salt rubbed into my fingers (watch out that you don't have any cuts in your fingers, because that will sting!) - didn't help much so nowadays I just use a very lemony soap (made with fresh lemon juice). It doesn't get the full smell off, but it does help a lot.

What I have heard, and found it works for me, is to rub your wet hands on the faucet when you wasd them. It doesn't take much, just once or twice, but it works for me every time.

Rub your hands on something that is sterling silver, it'll take the smell away quickly.

i usually get a small green lime, cut it into 2 and rub them together with your palms. then use them to rub the juices off the tip of your fingers and nails. then rinse it off with tap water. it should smell good after all that.
