We've all had this conversation at some point or another - probably more times than we can even count.
YOU: Hi!
OTHER PERSON: Hi!
YOU: How are you?
OTHER PERSON: Fine thanks; and you?
YOU: Oh, I'm fine, thanks!
REALLY?? Are you really fine? In general when people ask the friendly (but clieche) "How are you?", the response tends to be the cliche answer "I'm fine and you"
How often do you respond in a cliche or do you take the time to really tell the person asking you how you feel? Is it a matter of who is asking you the question or just your mood?
If it's a close family member, or a close friend, or my partner - then yes, I would take the time to actually 'unload' my feelings at that present moment .. otherwise I suppose, I do just retort to the cliche. It's not like everyone out there wants to hear your problems right.
As your friend, how are you today?

Ok, I was thinking about this the other day.
WHY do people ASK a total stranger "how are you?, How you doing?" in the first place? I mean WHY ask that? - I have the tendancy to reply "None of your business!" - but I never do as I have to polite :P
And I really hate it when someone asks "What's up?" I just freeze and say "how should I know?" hahaha!! "smiling as I type this" - I have actully done this.
I wish there was some other form greeting. "Hi, hello" is nice, but then we follow it up with "how are you?" arrrgh..
nevermind
anyway, since you asked and you're my friend, I have a sore throat can't take anything down, accompanied with a nice splitting headache. :-D

I think we ask strangers, only because its been ingrained into us from childhood - the societal norms of politeness !
'what's up' - erm the sky, the ceiling - something equally lame would come out of my mouth and the person tends not to find that quite amusing :S
Imagine, conversations starting with 'hey, what did you do this weekend' - that would have to instigate a detailed response right ?? And you can avoid the cliche Q&A's.
For your sore throat, have some hot ginger tea with honey; or gargle your mouth with hot water and salt. The only cure for headaches for me is 'tiger oil / tiger balm' - rub it on your forehead. Hope you feel better.

I really like starting my convos with "hello". Sounds neat and really down right to the purpose.
Thanks for the advice. I already done with the salt and everything :D
nothing like some good old pill of 500mg of paracetamol to get rid of the head pain!
