You need to take a diving training course with a certified instructor. Usually the course covers theory and practices in pool and seas. Organizations like PADI and NAUI are internationally recognized. Most people travel to other countries (Carribeans, SE Asia) for leisure diving. Just like driving a car, getting a licence means you just possess the required knowledges for diving. Experience can only gained by actual practices with cautions. Hope you will enjoy diving.

SCUBA, self contained underwater breathing apparatus. It's a fun hobby, I guess, especially if you have tried snorkeling. Going underwater is really fun. If you want to enjoy SCUBA just for seeing a place or spot, you may wish to have a discovery dive without needing a license but you need to be supervised by a highly-skilled SCUBA diver. If you want to enjoy SCUBA as a hobby, you may get a license to dive for more than 10 feet. You can ask your local government or beach resorts offering SCUBA gear or even your SCUBA gear shop on how to get license on your locality.

I know all about SCUBA diving. I have been a certified PADI diver since the summer of 1998. A year later, I advanced up one level; advanced diver. Well, I cannot teach people about SCUBA, yet. Until I get my instructor level completed. Yeah, you need to get your SCUBA certification. You can log onto www.padi.com. Maybe you can find SCUBA stores and training facilities in your area. It is really expensive to take SCUBA lessons. However it is really worth it. Let me know about the PADI website. OK? PADI stands for Professional Association of Diving Instructors.

I am a certified Dive Control Specialist (dive master/assistant instructor). At almost any scuba shop you can do what is called a 'try scuba'. This is done under a dive master or instructor. I do them through the scuba shop I work for. It is simply a scuba session in the pool in the shallow end. We encourage people to sign up for certification for anything beyond that. Then most reputable shops can certify divers. We teach classes at the shop and many of the local colleges, practice in the pool and then perform open water dives for certification. My shop the class takes at least 7 sessions and 5 open water dives (2 days of dives). You can get certified at some resorts but most of those are resort certification only and will not allow you to dive anywhere else. In order to go to a scuba facility and dive with a boat or on a trip, you must hold a certification. There are many groups that do certs, SSI (Scuba Schools International) is the one I dive under but there are also PADI, NAUI, and some others. I would never take someone into open waters without training in a pool.
