Here in Quebec, people love purebreds, especially if you are poor and getting a purebred dog or cat is like gold.
I have seen people have a mutt, or ordinary cat and then have the opportunity to own a purebred, and what do they go and do, they give up the family pet in order to have the purebred.
I love purebreds too but there is no way I am going to give up my cats now for a purebred, if I cannot have them both, I will just pass up on the offer,
what would you do and why (if you want a rating add the why)

I would never give any of my Pets up for anything
And I believe that the crosses are more loving and loyal then a pure Bred
The only purebred I have ever had was a Labrador and he was lovely but I would not give up my Pet that I own now for a Purebred as you say these Animals have feelings like us and my little Fellow is like my Child to me.

here in north carolina, we love all kinds of pets. i have a yorkie and i have a mutt dog. i love them both the same. they are both cute and loving and don't like one more then the other. i couldn't make a choice between the 2 just because one is a purebreed. there is much love in both kinds of animals. i couldn't do it either, sheila

If I couldn't afford to take on the purebred, then I wouldn't. I would never give up a pet that I already had just to get another one with a great bloodline. I have had a few mutts in my time. The only reason why they are no longer with me is that I moved across the country and I had to find homes for them. I had purebreds and a couple of mutts. I moved to Alaska and got an Alaskan Husky. He moved to Scotland with me. I kept him till he went to the Rainbow Bridge. We now have 2 Siberian Huskies, both purebreds, one has papers the other was is a rescue and they don't give them out.

My suggestion is that mix breeds are a great and becoming all the rage! If you check the shows, you can see many knew mixbreeds becoming purebreeds, dogs and cats alike. The question is personal preferance, what you like and what you want.
The only advantage in purebreeds is more money is selling the offsprings. With mixbreeds, you can taylor your personnal wants. As an example, I am a runner and have two daughter 8 and 10 years old, I wanted a dog to guard my children and to run with. I chose 2 australian cattle dogs for there great stamina, mixed with pitbull for protection. They are great dogs and very happy with them. Please be sure that you research background on the mixes for temperment and breeding problems. Sincerely, theponch

I happen to have two purebred beagle dogs, but it just happened this way. I admit, the second one, we absolutely wanted a beagle, purebred. But even if they were mutts, I wouldn't change them for the world. I get so attached to my pets, i can't imagine exchanging them for any other pet!

Your discussion title reminds me of the movie "Animals are Beautiful People."
As much as I want to have purebred if my budget is not enough I won't go for it. I think oridnary animals are equally good and just as lovely and don't need expensive food as well.

I agree. Your pet is a member of family and whether it's pure bred or not you can't simply get rid of one in favour of the other. That would be like choosing between your children.

The sad thing is, a lot of people are actually willing to give up a family pet who has grown to love them...regardless of the reason. It just maes it all the more disgusting that the reason is they wanted a purebred animal instead. If i had the chance to own a purebred, the only way i would take it is if i could keep my current animals. i woul dnever give up my cats or dogs simply to get an animal with pure genes. i love them far too much to do that and i know they love me as well. They are members of the family. Like you said already, animals are people, too!

I tend to get my animals from the local animal shelter. They do have some purebreds, but most of them are mutts. I would never give up my dog just to get a purebred. I think that this just adds to the problem of crowding in the animal shelters. If I could I would rescue every animal in the shelter since must of them are kill shelters here. I just can't quite afford more than one dog at this time. I would love to have a cat for the house as well, but since I am allergic to them and so are my husband and 18 month old son I guess I won't be able to do that.

Well I agree with you if you're happy with your animals and they're healthy then keep them of course. Why ? Well because animals learn very fast who their owners are and they'd miss you. all I have to do is go into town and when I get home my puppy crys and jumps all over me. I am very picky what I choose for a pet, not because I couldn't love any animal but because I have asthma I do Not dare have a cat and most dogs bother me too.

I actually rather prefer ordinary cats. I think its criminal to allow a pet to breed and make more kittens or puppies when fixing the animal is so easy. I find that there is a kind of healthyness to an animal that hasn't been back bred for generations, like the royal families of Europe being all related & having hemophilia in the family.

You are right there are a lot of people that have pure bred animals but I have found that while I loved my little Yorke she was prone to all the physical problems that most pure bred animals have , they have been so over bred that all the bad genes are becoming dominant. As for a mix breed, there are a lot of beautiful animals that are not pure breed and need homes and I for one would welcome any animal with a good disposition in to my home. My brother has a Himalayan cat, Zack is beautiful but he also has $8000 vet bills as well My daughter has a mutt cat, he cost her nothing and his vet bills are for neutering and fleas, no other problems and beautiful disposition.
