ok its my sons 3rd birthday next sunday and i still havent been able to decide what to get him. i dont really want to buy him more toys since he already had more of them then he needs (or there is space for). but i want to get him something that will last. im on a tight budget so i cant go and get him a sandbox or the like (which would be really nice though) but im curious, what have you bought your 3 year olds for their birthdays? or what do you think would be a good present?

I'm not sure what is near you, but is there a Zoo, or a Discovery Center by you? How about Chuckie Cheese? You could make a day of it at any of these places without any reservations and booking a party. A 3-year old should love any of these options, and you could buy or pack some food, buy an ice-cream cone there, etc. You can tell them at Chuckie Cheese that it's his birthday and they'll give you a birthday balloon without the cost of a party. Can you invite a friend or two, or relatives to go along so your son will have playmates? If money is really tight - you could go to the park to play and then have a scavenger hunt or pirate hunt back at your house. I did this before where you hid trinkets and such and follow a map (you can make it simple with drawings for him to follow) - if you can hide like 10-15 things and have them crawl over and under things to find them it'll be more fun. THen you can have homemade cake and he can play with his friends. Hope that helps.

When she said she didn't really want to buy him more toys, I went with the more intrinsic MEMORIES MADE and remembered kind of present. :o) I have given my kids PRESENTS that were parties and entertainment - they work great as a present and the memory and pictures last a very long time.

oh i like the scavenger hunt idea! it would also prepare him for the easter egg hunt (hopefully the weather is good for that this year!) i dont really think we will be able to go very far on his bday since people will be coming at different points of the day, but we should at least be able to make it across the street to the park (providing the weather is nice!) thanx much for your response hon :)

:o) I love those kind of parties where you get the kids to go on hunts, or make things -- they all seem to go over so wall.

Why not select him a puzzle for his age, and when he is finished with it frame it and hang it up in his room, that way, it builds his self esteem, and he can keep it forever. A more serious one, open up a savings account, and pledge to deposit an amount, small enough so you can still do it in months when your budget is tighter, until he turns 18. He can off course also contribute with his own pocket money as he grows older. Although he will most probably not fully understand now, he will be very grateful to you when he turns 18!

lol he is actually too lazy to put puzzles together on his own, he always has me do it for him... i actually did open a savings account for him when he was just a few weeks old. but my finances have been soo horrible that i cant really afford to put any money in at this time. my income is lower then my bills... but there is still some money in his account which i refuse to touch.. ive also been keeping every single penny ive gotten since he was born and been saving those for him as well.

I think that the actual present at that age really doesn't matter to be completely honest with you. I have a 5 year old and 3 year old and neither one of them can remember what I bought them for their last birthday. Just make sure that it's something that is durable and long lasting because the worst thing to do is go buy some cheap present and then they break 1 - 2 weeks later. Personally my favorite thing I've bought for my daughters has been Disney movies because they love to watch them and they are essentially timeless.

give him present like his most favorite character outfit because he can use it on special occasions too or in the party itself if you prepare some theme or motiff also. . . it's useful for trick or treat and during summer playtime with other kids !

How about a special blanket? You could get one that you know he would love or you could make a special trip together to pick one out. He would then have a special blanket that he could keep forever and he could take to sleepovers.

If i were you,i will choose books.Yes,books, you have said your son is already 3 yrs old. I think a 3 yrs old can read something. And good books can really influence a kid's life.Don't you think so. I also have a son,who is 6 yrs old now. When i have time, i will take him (to be exactly,he takes me,cuz that is his choice)to bookstore.Where he reads like a hungry person. How about your son?I think all kids like reading stories,so why not buy him some good books?
