Critique Me!!!!!

Lone Tree - This is a lone tree that I found in an abandoned mining area. The area was devoid of life...no grass, no trees, no animals...just dirt and mud. We were driving along and saw this lonely tree standing proudly on the hillside. It speaks to me of strength and beauty.

I have a beginners passion for photography and have found it's difficult to get constructive critiscism from friends and family. No one wants to hurt your feelings. So, I thought, where better to recieve honest feedback than mylot! I worked for several years in portrait photography and feel confident in my skills in that type of photography. I'm just not sure if my eye is as well trained in other types of photography. I'd appreciate any and all comments, I feel like it's the absolute best way for an amature to teach themselves a new skill. Are any of you teaching yourselves the art of photography? Have you found any useful web resources? I look forward to chatting with you!

I personally like it. I like the lighting and everything. I think it add something interesting to the photo. I think it really emphasizes the loneliness of the tree. I think it really helped create the mood that I think you were trying to portray. The only real problem I see with it is that some of the tree - the top and some of the side branches - are cut off. Good Job!

There are a few blogs by professional photographers you can read. http://www.digital-photo-secrets.com/ You can subscribe to the tips. It is a good site. Take more pictures on a variety of subjects and see what you are good in. Some of us are good in close-ups or macros. Some in landscapes, sports and so on. Don't worry about the type of camera you are using, your skills come first in every aspect.

I like your subject matter, but found the picture a little too dark. You might want to reduce the contrast and increase the brightness. Also, and this may just be me, but my eye was drawn to the roots and the stones around them more than to the tree. Please take my comments in the spirit they were intended, as constructive criticisms not as attacks. I think you have potential. Keep taking pictures and keep showing them, getting feedback is good. You might also want to check out some books at the library on the works of photographers you admire. I am currently studying the work of Ansel Adams as I find his photos intriguing. Like you, I am trying to teach myself but I think when I retire I shall actually have time to take some classes from professionals.

My Tree - *
Here's my tree photo. It's kind of stark and boring, but I like it. Feel free to comment.

Thank you for taking the time to respond! I absolutely take your advice as it was meant! Constructive criticism is a valuable tool! I'm still learning my way around photoshop but I will definately give your suggestions a go! It's funny you mention Ansell Adams...I too admire his work! I took a look at your tree and see great potential! I love how bare trees look like silvery threads against the sky. Thanks again!

I personally like dark photos, but I think you need to adjust your lighting just a smidgen. Not much, mind, just a tiny bit. Also, maybe adjust your angle? For that picture I would've gone up just a bit, starting just above the roots beginning, and ending nearer to the branches tops. All in all though, that's a pretty lovely picture. I've dabbled in it for years, but I'm just not getting more serious about it. I dunno, people say I've knack for it ^_^ Keep taking pictures, hun. I think you're good at it.

Thank you for your compliments and suggestions! I agree that I probably should have chosen a different angle but, those roots were beautiful in my eye! Thanks for responding!

Your photograph pinched my heart. Not because it's an ugly photo but I think that you were able to capture and convey the sadness of the tree. It's actually very good. If your photo can elicit a feeling from the people that look at it, you should be very proud. I wanna see more. keep it coming.

Thanks for commenting! That is a beautiful photo however, my skills are not at that level at this point in time! Thanks for sharing a great example though!

i'd have to say you did get the loneliness of the tree. The way it was all in black in white. It gave a dark lonely feeling, but in a creative way! Its like it makes you want to sympathize with the tree.
