A notebook and a laptop are the same thing, basically a small computer that is designed to be portable. When they first came out they were referred to as 'laptops'. Now however, the computer industry in general is trying to get away from that term and would rather use 'notebook.' The reasoning for this is based on the fact that notebooks are not designed to sit on your lap, because they become hot and can injure the user, or cause the computer to overheat. The battery resting on your legs is not a good thing, especially since there has been reports of them bursting into flames due to defect. That in a nutshell is why the industry is trying to get everyone to call them 'notebooks,' but again notebooks and laptops are the same thing.

The notebook is much easier to take with you if you want to work away from home, but my personal feeling is that it isn't as comfortable to use. My desktop computer is always set up and ready to go and my printer and files are handy. Each has its use so you have to determine what you would get the most use out of.
