How hard is it to find freelance work? I am not talking big paying work, just something to build my experience. Any freelancers knowlege would be great.

I live in a small town and started doing freelance work by submitting photos of local events to the newspaper. I covered events my children were in and sent photos to the paper. When I retired I am now the photographer for the paper and am suplementing my retirement with a retainer from the paper. People contact me to buy pictures that have been in the paper. I have been asked to do some custom work for people as a result of my work being in the paper. Some other photographer I know have entered their work in the local Fair or art displays. The more you can get your work seen the better for your business. I would not wait for the big contract from a magazine but rather shoot what you like and know about. One web site I have submitted photos to for resale is www.bigstockphoto.com You might want to submit some photos to them and see what happens.

So even without a resume they took your pictures. Do you do digital or do you just submit the hard pics through the mail. wouldn't know where to start. I was thinking of this though, just didn't know where to start.

The paper is a small weekly and pictures of Local sports and events are important to them. You have to expect that they will reject most of you pictures at first until you find out just what they are looking for. Remember to write something about each photo. Talk to the editor/owner and see what they want in pictures.

Wish I could afford to do that. But I can't or I would definately do that. Nothing better than pursuing your passion.

The problem with freelance work is it becomes, well... free, for lack of a better term. Fact is there are 30 people waiting in line behind you with a digital camera willing to do the job for half the price. This is not to say that you shouldn't take on freelance projects if they come your way. However I would discourage you from actively seeking them. It sort of feels like pounding your head against a brick wall after awhile, trust me. The best way to build your experience is to keep shooting. Not for someone else, for yourself. Keep your ear to the ground and try to get involed with small homegrown projects that you feel comfortable working on. The more you surround yourself with people doing good creative things the more opportunities you will see fall into place. Hope that helps, and good luck.
