What I usually do it try to do one good cleaning a week and then during the rest of the week I tiddy up to keep it that way.
Also, it is good to get organized and have a schedule. Schedule your day so that you can have time to get everything done. It is good to have your children on a schedule too, so that you can have then napping while you are doing something that requires your full attention or while you are just taking a breather.
As far as clutter - get those tubs (or bins) from Walmart/Target with the lids - big ones and small ones. Put the kids toys in there. Put a piece of tape on the outside and label each one. They are good for storage too. Label them and store them in the closet or garage whichever you have.
Keep your mail to a minimum. Whatever you don't need throw away immediately. Don't let it pile up.
Depending upon how old your children are you can have them help you. PLEASE don't make the same mistake your mom did. (no offense) Let them start by picking up thier toys after they are done and putting them in their bin. Have them put thier clothes in the hamper when they are taken off. It is never to early if you ask me as long as they can walk they can pick up thier toys - at least.
Keep some of those Lysol cloths around. They are great for quick clean ups. You don't have to lug all of your cleaners out just to touch things up. Do a quick wipe down in the bathroom whenever you go in there to use it - if it needs it.
I hope this helps!!!
Best of luck to you!

Just to add something. If your husband doesn't mind left overs (thank God mine doesn't) then you may want to cook a meal that last at least two days so that you don't have to cook a big dinner every night.

I am also a stay home mom, and what I do is break up my day so it is not so crazy. As soon as all of the kids are in school and my toddler is in pre-school Icome home and clean up the livingroom a bit to make it decent. Then I get myself breakfast and come to my desk and start "working" on mylot.
At 12:30 pm I pick up my daughter from pre-school and brng her home for a nap. While she is napping I have lunch then I do dishes.
when laundry is needed I will do laundry in between "working" on mylot. when the rest of the kids get home I will help them with there home work and then they will help me finish cleaning up the living room, since it is there toys and things that mess it up the most.
When hubby gets home I make dinner, and he washes the dinner dishes. Kids go to bed, hubby and I get a break to either have some quality time together or I will come back to mylot and get more "work"done.

I am sorry to hear about your mum.
The best advice I can give is don't put things off. If they need doing do it as soon as you realise, as it soon mounts up.
I'm not sure what tips you want! I put a load of washing on before I go to bed, then you gett he days clothes in and it's all ready to hang on the line in the morning!
Storage boxes are good for clutter you need. You can get some really nice ones these days. And never keep something because you might use it one day!
You will work most things out as you go along. I'm still learning new tips every day! Try adding frugal living as one of your interests on here and there are loads of handy tips!
Good luck!
