no cellphone at work

Is this a policy in your office? It is in my job. I am in a call center they used to allow it since we are only on e-mail support now they banned it. I find it unreasonable because it defeats the purpose of having your cellphone for emergency purposes. They told us to leave it in our lockers and you can't really go in with your cell as the guards thoroughly checks. Our lockers are not safe because just last week an officemate of mine had her stuffs stolen after leaving it in her locker. Do you think there's justice in this rule?

The only thing i can think of is that it was being abused and that is why the banned the cell phone. We are allowed to have it in our office as long as it is on vibrate and we don't talk on it while we have customers. Which i think is very fair. How do you get emergency calls then to they take in the office and pass them to you or are you completely restricted once you get in there. I know when I worked at the prison we were not allowed to carry cells at all. Mostly because of the prisoners.

Thanks, right now, they are not giving out the telephone number in the office, since we just moved. I have a kid to check every now and then that's why it's being a big deal for me. But you're right they banned it because some of the reps were caught talking on their cellphones while at work, which is really of course not fair to the company. I just hope they'll be giving the telephone number so as not for me to worry that much.

That rule also applies in our office, but only to cameraphones though... so ordinary cellphones are allowed to be brought inside. I don't really know why they have to ban those camera phones from getting inside our workstation..but since none have passed a petition regarding that rule, everyone is compelled to follow though not really heartily. but there are some other companies who are just allowing their employees to bring cellphones inside provided these gadgets have to be on silent mode so it can't disturb somebody else at work. And my girlfriend is in one of these companies..she can still use her cellphone inside the office which makes her very happy.

I think that the company has every right to enforce the no cellphone rule as they are paying you for your time and not just 90% or whatever of your concentration because you have your mobile. I would hope that if there really was a real emergency - like with your family then they would be able to get a hold of you through your work phones even if through a manager. I think as long as people are sensible and discreet about having their cell phone then there should not be an issue mad eout of it but I thnk maybe all too often people are sitting texting their mates. I hope everything does work out as there is nothing worse than sitting in work feeling like the rules are unjustified. Good luck,

of course its really harsh to put up such rules! a cell phone is one on which every individual relies upon personally, and ur company shouldn't have done it. of course u can have an alternation for it -- u can put a mobile alert in ur e-mail or computer at office -- u can divert ur all(or) most important calls to any office telephone with the prior premission -- u can read ur sms within the office computer
