Images, Why are they so important?

My personal image probably doesnt mean much to tother, maybe my friends, when they scroll a page they see it right aways and know i was there.
But then when posting about food you can add an image of a http://images.google.ca/images?q=tbn:a5GO5JVVq_nY2M:www.cepolina.com/freephoto/f/nature.fruits.food/banana.jpg
So does having an image in the post make it more attractive to look at, read, or is it more distracting than anything?

An image is attractive to both uneducated and educated also. It gives satisfaction with a look from the distance. The power of image is like that many nations ban their movie hoardings having sexy looks.

I believe adding an image increases the traffic to the discussion as it shows the person took some extra time putting the discussion together and might be worth looking at more carefully.
