I must confess that I have never tried developing something like Orkut or even something that is near to a forum or its likes. But, I must say that it would be a please to program something like orkut and I would love doing that. And by the way, masstechnologist, I guess discussing it would be great idea.
First of all, to develop something like orkut or for that matter any website, it is good to have at least some working knowledge of AJAX. After that, just check how forum softwares like phpBB etc work. You'll get a rough idea of how to make another orkut...

I was searching a bit on www.hotscripts.com, this was what I found:
http://www.boonex.com/products/dolphin/
It looks good, has a lot of features and seems easy to use. I was actually wondering about this and hadn't taken the time to search yet. I'll download this and see if it's any good. Oh, and here are more community scripts: http://www.hotscripts.com/search/15282178.html. If the dolphin one doesn't fit your meets you could always try another one or make one yourself.
Good luck.

The hardest thing is this whole process is to actually insure yourself that your website is safe. People at Orkut.com use advanced PHP and CGI (mainly) algorithms. I'd suggest you to first learn basic PHP at least (considering you already know HTML and CSS) and then, try to understand how it works.
Another thing, I'd recommend not to start such project alone.

I am also looking for the same stuff. After searching through the net i found some paid php code to create a social networking website. I have also gone through the website of phpbb. I has got time time to look into that in detail. Please post here if you get some information regarding the same.
