Fleas Everywhere

I have had my two cats for a few months now. It turns out that the home i recently purchased is infested with fleas, and now so are my cats! They are in the carpet, on my furniture, and if I sit still long enough, I will see one crawling on my arms. I have treated the cats, but they are still in the carpet and end up back on the cats anyway. My kitten seems to be allergic. She has scabs all over and keeps scratching them open. Then I have to catch her and try to get her to stop bleeding. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have tried flea powders that you put on the carpet and then vacuum up. I have tried dipping the cats, but to no avail. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
