should people earn respect?

i personally feel that the idea to respect your elders solely on the fact that they are old is ridiculous. also the idea to respect for authority such as a teacher solely on the fact that they have that title is ridiculous. people have to earn respect and just because your old doesn't mean you deserve it. if your a mean person or a disrespectfull person you don't deserve respect. and for teachers they have to earn the respect of the students by actually showing knowledge in there subject. what do you think?
