BMW or Merc? Or others?

There seems to be a worldwide appeal for Beemers and Mercs. However, they are pricey and certain have relatively huge engines. I'm of the opinion that if Volkswagen, Toyota, Nissan were to produce cars, for example, like the 3-series, I mean, with the same small dimensions, over-sized engines and price, they would be able to meet, or surpass those BM and Mercs too. So it is just a matter of choice, not competency, right?
