That is a wide open topic. Having lived in both houses and apartments I can say that it depends upon your lifestyle, your family, and your age and abilities as to which is best for you at the time. Right now we are living in an apartment and for us it is the best solution. We do not have the responsibility of maintainance, yard work, etc. and that leaves us more time to do the things we enjoy. Earlier in our lives when our children were small a house was a better choice as it gave us the opportunity to decorate for the children, to have a yard full of 'toys' and equipment for them and to save extra money by growing a large vegetable garden and even raising some animals. It depends upon your interests and your abilities and your lifestyle which is the best choice.

pros for house: more room generally, and if you own you can paint, remodel, etc to suit yourself, opportunity to decorate for the holidays outside (this has always been a big thing for us during Christmas), large outdoor area that is generally more private and can be personally changed to suit your family and needs
cons for house: if you own you have maintainance costs, taxes, insurance etc that can be a big expense both in money and time and you are pretty much stuck in one place without the freedom to move as easily
apartment pros: no maintainance costs, lower insurance, no yard work, can usually move within 30 days if need arises, depending upon unit the close knit community can be a big boost or a hindrance in times of need
apartment cons: less freedom to decorate to suit yourself, no place for a garden or personalized outdoor area, neighbors can be a problem if apartments are poorly soundproofed etc,
Hope this helps
