The movie was based on a true story. You can read more on Wikipedia. The information that I read indicates that the numbers of soldiers were exzaggerated, however it is true that the Spartans were able to defeat great numbers of the Persians before their loss.
Eventually, just like in the movie the Spartans were able to defeat the Persians even though they were again greatly out numbered at a later battle.
The reason for having so few soldiers was due to the fact that the Spartans did not want to interupt the olympic games that were taking place at the time. They may have won if they were able to hold back the persians long enough for the games to be over and reinforcements to be sent. They were winning despite being out numbered based on the persians only being able to send a limited number of their soldiers through the small pass, the fact that they had strong shields while the persians had weak wooden shields, and they had long spears to reach beyond the shields while the persians had only short spears and arrows. They lost in 3 days only because of the betrayal of the location of the pass. If they survived longer who knows what may have happened.

Thus, explains the fearless stance of King Leonidas in bringing his men to the seemingly hopeless fray. His battle plan was superb and his baits were magnificently executed. The role of the hunchback was apparent the moment their conversation was over. He was to spoil the terrain advantage that allowed the 300 to survive and destroy so many persians.
The portrayal of the God-King Xerxes was excellent. He stood tall and was adorned as much as any ruler of his stature in his time. His character was also rounded into one that can not accept the possiblity of human defiance of his terms.
And the metaphor of the offering of earth and water... meaning the lands (and water bodies) of Sparta and all of Greece...

300 is an absolutely terrific movie. the attitude, the valour the spartans display send a chill down my spine. so much to keep their honour. they challenged and even demured a person who projected himself as god. i think they were bogged down by the wrong priests who just had no respect for these warriors. my personal favorite line in the movie when the king says : SPARTANS NEVER RETREAT!!!!!!!!!!. the greatest sequence when the king as a young lad fights the beast and also , when he kicks the intruder into the well..HAD HE NOT KNOWN THE SECRET PATH, I THINK IT WAS NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE TO DEFEAT THE SPARTANS. THE AMOUNT OF RIGOROUS TRAINING THEY WERE UNDERGOING, SPARTANS APPEARED INVINCIBLE TO ME.
