The meaning behind reading.

Some read religiously. Some are repulsed by reading. What does it mean when someone reads all the time? Does it simply mean they like to read? Does it mean they are smarter? Does it mean they have more desire to be smarter? Are those people who don't read inferior? As Mark Twain said, "The man who doesn't read good books has no advantage over the man who can't read them." There is an obvious trend I notice. The smarter people are the ones reading books. They have a desire to enhance their knowledge for themselves. So many people elect not to read. Instead they will watch countless hours of television. What if people replaced television time with reading time? How much better off would they be? 58% of the US adult population never reads another book after starting high school (grads and non-grads) 70-80% of US households haven't purchased any books in the last year 70% of US adults haven't been in a bookstore in the last five years So, what does it really mean when a person reads?

I don't know if reading can make one smarter, if you only read and don't think, I doubt it will make you smarter. If you understand what you are reading, then maybe you will be smarter. Knowledge is only one of the reasons for reading. Most of the time, I read so that I can get motivation, explore to new things, learn from other's experience. I guess the main reason for me to read is to learn, so that I will grow up, or be wiser. Among my friends, I see those who read and those who don't read. I will not say who are smarter or not, but those who read think more positively and mature.

You are right with what you say. It is hard to actually put quantities on reading and what it exactly means, but one could safely conclude that reading is positive, and a great tool that should be utilized by more.

I love to read but would not say that I am in anyway smarter then anyone else . Actually intenllectually I am not even as smart as a lot of people I know or whom I hang out with . I don't read for anything more then the enjoyment out of it . I enjoy having some time to myself with a good book to just read and be able to relax . I always liked reading even in school and feel that it is just a hobby .

That is good. It is good to see you are reading because many people don't. I'm sure that it will help you in some way. You never get dumber from reading any book. You always take something away with you. You stated that you don't think you are in anyway smarter than anyone else. I suppose you meant that you don't think your smarter then anyone else just because you read books and they don't. Right? I believe reading makes every person individually smarter. What level that is I don't know, but it surely is some level of enhancement.

I read all the time, I watch very little tv (but enjoy movies), I'm an info junkie as well so I love to ready people's blogs, no matter what they are about.

Reading peoples blogs? Do you have any links to good blogs in general? Or good blogs on GTP sites? Also, this type of reading is not exactly the best type of reading. I think it is better to read books, well-thought out articles, etc.
