My Spiny Mouse Died...but WHY??

I lost my beloved Pharoah over the weekend. He was my, only eight month old, spiny mouse. I still cannot figure how he died; however. I am looking for any advice from a vet, or even just someone who has had these animals for a long time.
He was perfectly fine until I came home from work Friday evening. He was laying in the bottom of the dead, barely breathing. He couldn't walk, merely drag himself around, and I held and tried to get him to eat and gave him water through an eye-dropper for almost the whole night. I had no choice but to put him back into his cage around 3AM, as I was falling asleep, and when I awoke around 8AM I swre he was dead. He wasn't breathing that I could see, and didn't move even a muscle when I picked up the cage. I sat the cage on my desk, as I wanted to be 100%, but had to leave for an early, all day appt. when I returned I checked on him, and he had moved and was breathing almost normally again, although couldn't walk still...I held him, gave him water, and again tried feeding him, until around 8PM that night when he went into small seizures, then one large one; where his nose bled; and then died....
I would really just like to know anyone's opinions of what could have happened. My sister-in-law is a vet tech, but could only think of a possibly blockage as she doesn't deal with rodents often....
Thank you for any help you can provide.
