I am just wondering what kind of suggestions you can all provide for me on how to get my dog to stop chewing up garbage, diapers, clothes shoes and socks? This is a very tough thing to break him of, we have tried using tobbasco sauce, and I have googled this topic and have tried alot of the different suggestions there. I am wondering do some dogs just never quit chewing on things, is there anything short of obediance training? I really do not want to have to get rid of the family pet, and give up so soon (we have had him for 4 months, but I am at a loss for what to do. I find myself starting to hate this dog and it is causing alot of stress. Please help me, ANYTHING that you can suggest would be welcome.

I'm only responding to your discussion because i feel your pain. I know what your going through, my pups a year and a bit now, and i went through the same dredded situation with him, until i got this spray that stopped it for good.
There's this stuff called Bitter Apple, It's a spray and all you do is spray it into his mouth, and then on everything, it carries the smell of apples, it's nice, and once he tastes it he won't go back.
It's not that expensive, and it's totally healthy, so you don't have to worry about causing any internal problems or make him sick, because it's approved, and safe.
You can even taste it, it's kinda grose, but that's the only way to keep him away.
We tried hot stuff too, but my dogs both like anything spicy, so there's not much that helped in that department.
Hope this helps...

no problem, i know the frustration and stress that comes out of it, the awesome thing, is that it even works on the little ones, at a couple months old when they start chewing.
I'm glad i could help in one way shape or form, and since i have so many pets, you ever need any kind of advice on stopping something or anything lemme know.

Would you give your child away, if it was acting the way you did not approve of, or stressed you out?
An animal is your family now. You have to learn how to nip it in the bud early. You pet is young, and he is teething. It hurts, so he will chew anything he can. Try getting raw hide and rubber hard toys for him. When you see him go to something not acceptable to chew, say no harshly, do not hit him. And quickly give him his toys. Dogs take months to learn, so you must be patient and loving, and he will be fine and you will be happy. If you find this too much of a stress or chore, while he is young, please give him to a loving family. Don't get any more pets until you are ready to give it full time training.

very good points! We have a LOT of toys and rawhides for him, I guess he just prefers to chew everything else first.
I think that being a chow/retreiver cross he would be better suited to being an outside dog. When we finally get moved we will give him run of the fully fenced back yard, maybe that would help!

My sister would put pepper on everything the dog would chew, or toss a little handfull of pepper at him when she caught him. Either that, or a spray bottle full of water. It worked everytime, for her.

It sounds like your dog is teething. My puppies are too. I found a toy foot and a toy shoe that reminds them of the real thing, and they have left my own things alone. Also, they have bones that are to clean their teeth, and not to eat, so that is something that they will constantly have, and not get rid of because it is not edible.
While they still chew some things, I know I've learned to take the garbage out immediately, and not to leave my shoes in the floor. Every door to the bedrooms always stay closed! When they reach a year, I'm told that problem becomes pretty much nonexistent. Now, if you can just last that long!
