My Heart Goes Out To The Penguins!

Anybody seen the documentary "The March Of The Penguins"? Made by a - I think Belgian - biologist who is an amateur filmer. He spent a whole year with the penguins. And won an Oscar this year! Ooooh boy... fantastic!
I always thought that penguins are a happy-go-lucky strange kind of birds, but boy, was I wrong. The doc shows you the life and the struggle on Antartica to stay alive, marching their wobbly way 150 miles inland to lay an egg, that is guarded by the fathers, while the women waggle back to sea to get some food... I will never get those pictures out of my head of those male penguins, keeping the egg warm between their legs, huddling together as a feeble protection against the Artic Polar winds... My hart went out to them.
Penguins always have a funny part in the movies (Madagaskar, Happy Feet) but their real life... geeeez!

Neither have I seen this film. But from what you discussed, I have to take my hat off for the penguins. This is a good discussion post as I now learn a new thing about these creatures. So, it looks like a lot of other films about penguins are not realistic of their true nature. The producers and directors should go to the antartica or artic to learn the behavior of these birds first before making their movies.

I absolutely agree... Penguins are very responsible, true to their partner for that year, creatures. A lot of them die on the way inland or back. Fathers guarding the egg don't eat for about three months, till the future mother is back (who went back to sea to get herself some food after producing an egg which took all her strength)... In the meantime, the little kid is born and is nursed at first by Dad. Talk about women's lib and emancipation...LOL
Movie directors should indeed learn with whom they are dealing...
