I live in New Zealand. An anti-smacking Law is being introduced banning the smacking of children. There have been several amendments to the law but the basis is that it will become a criminal offense to smack your children. We are lead to believe 85% of the population is against the introduction of an anti smacking Law. New Zealand has a high rate of incidences of violence toward children, self regulation has not reduced this. My view is that the government should legislate. My over all Opinion is simple. BIG PEOPLE SHOULD NOT HIT LITTLE PEOPLE. It is 2007 and we should use our intelligence and sense of reasoning to discipline our kids.. Am I wrong?

I agree with you as well. We do not smack our children and they are very loving and respectful. They don't cry when I tell them it is time to leave the place we are supposed to leave. They pick up their toys without fuss. They even do their chores without being told. It is amazing.

Its great isn't it. Respect is a two way street. I would not respect anyone whose only language was violence, so how would you ever get respect from a child who has been hit. They are frightened just like people are in the countires where the population know they will get hurt if they don't conform. I believe its called dictatorship, not in my home. Fear is not respect.

Those who have intellegence and common sense are encouraged to use it. It is because a lot of people don't, they they need to make laws against things like smacking. If this was not a problem, they would not need to make a law against it.

Sure, just let kids run wild and do whatever they want.
Nothing else works, so maybe that will.
If we tell them "no, don't do that!" they do it just to spite us.
So don't do anything and don't say anything and they will be confused and remain quiet while they think about it.

My Children don't run wild and they have never been smacked. I was never hit as a child and I am not wild. Hey old people get a bit annoying, they spill food and don't do what they are told, is it ok to hit them just to make sure they understand? We have not seen a generation of children who have been protected from violence. So all the kids running around today have grown up with the treat of corporal punnishement, its really working isn't it!
