The best advice I can offer is to check out the sellers feedback. If he has only a few, avoid buying from him or her. You might even e-mail a couple of his former customers and see if they are for real.
If the item you are buying is expensive, insist on insurance even if you have to pay for it.
Good luck. I have had really good luck on ebay but I try to avoid buying really expensive things. The most I ever paid there was $40 for a bedspread but the seller had about 1500 positive feedbacks. The bedspread is beautiful.

My problem is as a seller. Ive listed a computer 5 times now. Only to have Nigerian Scam artits ruin the auction with silly bids and people bidding who must do it for fun and never pay. Its cost me 20pounds so far and I still havn't sold it!!! :(

I did have a problem like that once on Yahoo auctions. We had listed my husband's airplane - a homebuilt that wasn't quite finished yet. We got all kinds of bogus offers until we just quit even looking at the auction. Then we got a phone call and the man said, "I'm the guy who bought your airplane." It was $19,500 and he actually sent us $5,000 to hold it until he got out here from Louisiana to look at it. He flew. Then a couple of weeks later, he showed up towing a trailer to haul it home. (From Oregon.) Maybe you can limit bidders on your auction to those who have a large number of feedbacks. Good luck. I know it can be frustrating.
