I just got my permit a few days ago, but drove for my first time a few hours ago. Spent about an hour just going around a parking lot getting used to my car.
I've got it down okay, however I still need lots of practice before taking my driving test.
Anyone got some tips or stories from starting to drive?

Congrats for getting a permit.. :) Is it different from our license? Actually when my friend taught me how to drive, he bring me to a hilly area.. If the car is manual then you could practice balancing your clutch as well as the gas pedal. And my brother brought me to the reclamation for me to practice with other cars on how to make a turn and of course signaling.. On parking, it's hard to park outside our house because there are cars from other people.. Good luck on your driving test.. :)

Congratulations!
as for the driving test itself. try to take it using an automatic transmission. even if you are good with a manual..you WILL get nervous during the test..and thats exactly when you'll stall etc. and even though they arent necessarily grading you on how "rough" the ride is...it does make an impression that you are not comfortable and confident in your driving skills.
try to practice your driving in parking lots, your local neighborhood. when your ready to try the freeway..try to go during a time of day that isnt as busy. avoid the morning rush hour..lunch hour and of course the evening rush hour.
after you've gotten comfortable getting on and off the freeway during a less busy time..then you can give the rush hours an attempt. but definatly practice a few days BEFORE you attempt the busy times.
