Why do people get so angry about others speaking their native tongues?

I listen to a guest in our home ranted about people speaking spanish/mexican in the stores of our community. While I do think it is important to have everyone speaking english in this country I don't have any objection to others speaking another language to each other. If a store clerk speaks to the customer ahead of me in her own language it doen't hurt me. As long as that same clerk is able to speak to me in english. Its odd, the same guest who was so angry that people would dare to speak in another language while in this country, on a day trip to Mexico, she was complaining that more of the shop keepers there didn't speak better english. Maybe she is just a very hard to please person.
While she was ranting about people not speaking english in the USA, my hubby finally got her to shut up by asking if she was learning chinese so she would be understood when they take over, lolololol.

Well i believe that if people move to a new country that they are expected to speak the native language of that country. I also feel that if someone is speaking there native tongue then the person who feels bad may be thinking that someone is insulting them.
Just my two cents.

I do agree that people should attempt to learn the language of a country they reside in. But I am confused by someone being insulted about two people speaking to each other in my presense. Not when they are talking to me, but say in a waiting room at a doctors. Why should that be insulting to me, which is what our guest was saying, that it was rude. How is that rude?
