"I understand you."
People become closer and enjoy each other more if they feel the other person accepts and understands them. Letting your spouse know in so many little ways that you understand them, is one of the most powerful tools for healing your relationship. This applies to any relationship.

I'm afraid my tendency is to say "I don't understand you." to often. When that happens I have to back up and start our conversation again. My husband and I seem to be talking from different planets sometimes. I think I understand what he says, then when I reply he responds with something completely off the wall as far as I'm concerned. It takes an effort to really try to understand! But like you say, it's worth it.

We can always pretend to understand somebody, but for what purpose?
It is better therefore to say you don't understand and try to sort things out, instead of you telling you understand yet having a hard time convincing yourself. :) thanks of responding, my friend.
But how happy we would be if we really are understood.
