Why do so many sports play such a large roll in our lives? I mean, our weekends are spent hauling kids to and from them, some evenings are spent in front of the television with them, it seems that it is hard to escape sports! Why are we so drawn to sporting events? The scores, the athletes, who is playing who, what college has the best teams, what is the best professional team, it truly boggles the mind.

Being a sportswriter, I can see there are a few basic human characteristics that sports play to.
There's the obvious competitive nature that most people have. Even if it is extremely strong, or a faint feeling inside of you, everyone has a bit of the competitive spirit in them. Sports brings that our of us, and help us at times from getting overboard with those feelings. I know that I get competitive when I am playing basketball or football, even with friends. I am sure there are many others who get like that, too. This applies to being fans of teams, because a lot of us invest emotionally to those teams and get as competitive just cheering for them as we do actually playing.
Also, I think that as human beings, we like good stories and underdogs. we get that at times, for instance the college basketball tournament, when we root for the underdogs and cheer for those good stories in sports.
There is a bit of envy there for some people; they want to be able to be as good as those people, and there are some who just marvel at the athletic ability that these athletes seem to possess naturally.

Well, I guess being married to an athletic trainer for so many years has jaded me to all of that. Thanks for reminding me. You are right, I almost always root for the underdog. I have been hauling kids to football, baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball and pretty much every other high school sport there is in support of our local team, for so many years maybe I am a bit burned out on sports. I played softball years ago, but I never was as gung-ho about it as some other people. It is fun to watch a really good, close, competitive game though.
