I did taekwondo. The training is quite tough which we need to do running, weigth lifting and stretching. Toning the body is basically is not our goal but we get toned in the process. Taekwondo/karate is about self defense. But the kind of martial art that i like is akkido. But if you want to find activities which helps to loss weight and tone the body I think body combat is quite good.

i did taekwondo, aikido and muay thai. its a very good cardiovascular exercise since it would really require one to move a lot

Yes! I love body combat. I started it around 3 months back, and I am crazy about it. I work for 3-4days a week. But then, of late, I have noticed that I am loosing lot of weight because of body combat. It is a vigorous cardio exercise which burns lots of calories. So, people doing body combat should make sure that they eat well.
My appetite has improved because of body combat and thats a good sign :)
However, I will stick on to 2 classes of body combat per week. The rest 2 will be for yoga/ aerobics :)
