Would you ever leave your dogs behind in a disaster?

Would you have left your dogs behind if you lived in New Orleans when the disaster struck? I know I wouldn't have me and my dogs would have walked out of New Orleans together or drowned. What would you have done?

Some people think we are crazy to feel so close to our pets. I have a dog I saved from a bad situation and he is my close and dear companion. He is a shepard mix and whenever I can I take him with me. In the case of a natural disaster I would have to take him with me. He would not survive without me or me without him. It is because of him that I make it through each day. I have a cat also, but she is almost impossible to take out without a harness and leash. I do have a carrier for her so I would not leave her behind. She got out once and was chased into the briars and it took her two days to return home. I was so depressed and upset. I know that my dog stays close to me because he is nervous about being left behind. I would side with you on this one.

It doesn't matter what pet we had if we could help them we would but if it ever came to helping one of our animals and risking the lives of our children in doing this then I would leave them behind as my children are more important to me . Even though we love our pets they can be replaced but the lives of my children can never be replaced .

Thank you for the best response vote! We are lucky people who have a pet that loves us so deeply. I am blessed to have my dog in my life. In every situation that I was going through trama, I had a dog by my side. They are truly angels sent to help us through the tough times.

I always wondered what I'd have to do with my dog and cat if disaster struck since I don't have a car of my own. Would I hitch a ride out of town with a neighbour? Call a friend? My cat is small enough to take on my lap, but my dog is medium sized so would require a bit of room. I'd definitely try though. Throw my kitty in a duffle bag, strap a leash on the dog and bolt for the safest place.

NO WAY! I'd never leave my babies behind..I have 3 dogs and a cat and I would do whatever I had to do to be able to take them with me if there was a hurricane or something here. Most of the time when we have hurricanes here, they say they will be really big storms and then by the time they actually hit here they're maybe category 1 or 2 storms, so we have been pretty lucky so far. I would pay whatever I had to pay and do whatever I had to do to be able to keep them safe and take them with me.

Our dogs are members of our family.I wouldn't leave any of my children so there is no way I could leave any of our dogs.

I would have brought my pets if it was physically possible. I don't know if I could bare the thought of them drowning. Some people though, when the helidcopters or rescuers came, were told they couldn't bring their pets along. I guess in those cases I would have to go :( It would be sad, but I'm not drowning or dying if there's no way I can save the pet.

OMG, Never. My dogs are like part of my family, I could never do that. We live in a bushfire area, and if god forbid something happens, ALL of my animals are coming with me.

I would never ever leave my pets behind no matter what!! They are my life as well as my daughter and hubby. Every time we have tornado warnings in our area, I make sure EVERYONE is in the crawlspace. I have a dog and 3 cats.

If at all possible I would take all of my animals with me. If, for whatever, reason I was not able to take them I would turn them loose so that they would have a fighting chance to save themselves. I have many animals, mainly goats, so it would take time for me to hook up the trailer and get them loaded but, if I had the time with no risk to my children I would do it in a heartbeat.
