Is Harry Potter good for kids?

I remember there being alot of contraversy in my hometown about the Harry Potter books when they first started coming out. They thought that the books were mindless and teaching children about witchcraft. I think that getting a child's face away from the TV and into a book is great. As for the content of the books, I think Harry Potter is fantasy but not necessarily bad. The Chronicles of Narnia were fantasy as well but no one seemed to have a problem with those books. What do you think of these books? Would you let your children read them?
