What the hell is going on? my stepdaughter has started counting in spanish as a default rather than english. my almost 3 year old stepdaughter says "activate" in spanish to activate the backpack or whatever stupid thing dora has better than she can say any other words in english. Coincidence that this new children's programming is teaching SPANISH!? or am I the only one seeing the correlation between illegan immigrants flooding society and children's programming adopting spanish. How come you don't see any let's say IRISH children's programming or something. It's stupid.

I like my children watching Dora. It allows them to learn a language other than English. If you have a problem with your child learning Spanish from Dora then don't allow her to watch it. As far as the Irish programs then maybe if enough people write to the networks about shows ideas in other languages they would make one.

I agree as I love the idea that my child likes Dora as I feel it is teaching her so much more then I would be able to as I only speak English .

I love that Dora teaches my daughter in Spanish . She is an incredibly smart child for her age and I believe a lot of it has to do with Dora . My three year old is obsessed with her and because of this she is now able to say things in three languages , she know the English , Spanish and French words for a lot of the different things they teach such as colors , numbers and shapes . I would love for Spanish to be taught in the shcools and love the idea that my child has been able to pick up on the different languages as you never know in life when having another language may help you . I can only speak English but put all my child in the French program at school just so they would be able to have more then one language and they say children can pick up on this so much easier then we can as their minds are like little sponges at this age .

I think it is better for them to learn other languages along with their native tongue especailly when they are young. The world is not just speaking one language.

well being bilingual is a good thing, u shouldn't be mad because ur daughter is learning another language, if u don't like it don't have her watch it, and teach her irish urself. she obviously isn't around it too much to start speaking spanish fluently, but if it was irish, would u be complaining?

ok everyone, I'm not concerned at my daughter's learning different languages in general, but it is not a coincidence that the networks are catering their time to spanish speaking shows, and that illegal immigrants (most of whom speak spanish) are all over the place nowadays. I am concerned that there is no diversity in the languages being tought by children's programming. If it was irish I wouldn't care, unless of course there was a huge influx of ILLEGAL irish immigrants and they were getting work under the table not paying taxes and benefiting from all government programs like hispanic illegal's are. Then I might be pissed that even children's programming was catering to the illegal irish immigrants. That was just an example of how NON-diverse programming really is. If you guys can't see the corellation then you have your head in the clouds

I personally think Dora kills brain cells. I think there is nothing wrong with teaching your kids to be bilingual but the way Dora and Diego go about it is all wrong and quite pathetic. They aren't teaching useful Spanish in my opinion. I'm 30...when I was little Sesame Street did a better job at teaching everyday Spanish than Dora and company does now. I could count to 10 in Spanish before I reached Kindergarten thanks to SS. So this sort of thing has been around long before the whole illegal immigrant thing came into the forefront. Every once in a while, usually early in the morning, PBS has shows like Telefrancais or French in Action and I still like watching those. When we lived in Japan, our daycare taught our girls basic Japanese. I'm all about expanding their minds when done in an appropriate manner. I personally think English should become the national language of the US.

I am right there with you, Where is Gretchen & her back pack? I am of German decent & I have yet to see any German speaking media here. The last time I heard any German was in the 80's when the song 99 Red Balloons came out. I have no problem with immigrants coming to the US legally, but it burns my butt that there is so much catering to the illegal immigrants that the resident Americans can't get anything done. I could go on, but I will stop here before I say to much.

As someone else has said, Spanish in kids TV has been happening for quite sometime.I also grew-up watching SS and picked up a half a dozen or so phrases in Spanish as a child.I am pretty sure that Spanish is the second most commonly spoken language in the world. I don't see any way it harms a child to learn a second language as a child. I don't like Dora because I think it's way too commercial. There is so much useless junk sold with Dora's image. I try to discourage blind consumerism in my son, so Dora's one of the shows I steer him away from.

I think you are reading to much into it. She is just a fad and kids pick up on fads easily. I have seen some of the shows and they aren't that good I think. They are almost to dumbed down even for little kids. Give it time and soon your stepdaughters won't even watch any more and won't be speaking spanish as default.

At a young age like this children can learn and tell the difference between laungages (sorry I have bad spelling). M kids all watched Dora and they have forgotten it all by now since starting school because spanish is not taught here our kids are learning French in school which is great as thier dad id french but doesnt bother to speak in French at home so they have to learn it at school so they can communicate with thier French grand parents and counsins. Personally I love hearing hearing different laungages and would love to speak German. In Scotland we have lots of eastern eurpoeans coming to work may be we will soon be getting polish and the like.

Yes, you are right. Dora and Diego teaches more Spanish than English. I don't know why my kids HAVE to learn Spanish language, but then in USA it does help to learn Spanish. But still I don't want my son to learn Spanish right now. He is almost 3 years old and he says a lot of Spanish words already. He has also started counting in Spanish. He loves to watch Dora and Diego. So, I just can't switch off the television. I am in a dilemma.

well if ur kids start learning another language early then they catch on faster versus if they start learning when they're older then it's harder to catch on to it.

I don't see a problem with my daughter watching Dora or with her speaking Spainish. I thought that children who learned other langauages did better in school than children who didn't. They are going to HAVE to take these classes in school so why not prep them for it. I do however understand what you're saying about the "coincidence" I don't think it's fair . But that's how it is. If you don't agree with them watching Dora, change the channel.
