I don't need to tell you the problem with the skimpy clothes teens are wearing. There are supposed to be dress codes but I have noticed that a lot of these school codes are not being enforced .
I feel that all students should have to wear school uniforms since these kids seem to forget they are going to school to get an education not to make a fashion statement or see how much skin they can show.
But I also feel that it should be something the kids should be involved in,a uniform they can feel comfortable with. What do you think?

ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! A school uniform at a public school, only annoys people and creates problems. Now I do agree with you that girls are dressing really skimpy, but its the parents fault for letting them go to school that way. I just want everyone to know I am not in school anymore so I am not partial towards this side because of that. The way to take care of the way kids dress is to find a way to change the parents.

u r pretty rite in sayn that its parent s fault. bt consider bcoz of 1 such careless (or faulty or wat evr u wud like 2 cll em) parent mite coz the rest of girls /boys in the class to pressurize their parents 2 get more skimpy dresses.
also peer pressure also makes a diff.
Hence imposing a dress code is better

changing the parents isn't gonna work.Parents today don't tell the kids what to do,the kids tell the parents. fortunatley the majoritey seems to be agreeing with me.Just because there parents allow them to dress like that doesn't mean the school has to. I don't understand why you don't see the dangers of teens dressing the way they do with all these perverts running loose

I so totally agree with you. I have said this for years and for the same reasons that you list. Kids do not dress modest anymore and it is sad that they do not respect themselves more that that. Uniforms would be a solution to the immodest clothes that they wear now. Eveyone could keep their minds and eyes on the lessons being taught instead of the girls bodys that are being paraded in front of the class

So true! What a great response! Most of the members seem to be agreement with us. But I do think that if a school desides to switch to a uniform,it should be something the kids have some day in and are comfortable with

My kids are still young so I don't have to worry about them dressing skimpy or anything like that. Two of my kids are in elementary school and they wear uniforms. I wasn't crazy about the idea when my oldest first started school but now I can honestly say that I do like it. No children are competing with each other about the clothes they are wearing and I think it's more simple by requring them to wear uniforms.

that's one of the reasons why I love the idea of school uniforms-no competition. No kids beating jumped for the clothes they were are they're sneaks, etc

I dont like the idea of uniforms. I was in shock when I heard my former high school finally did school uniforms. I graduated in 1998. They talked for a while it was a private school. My sister graduated in 2001, 3yrs later. They started the uniforms the next year I believe.
I know its good so kids dont show off bad stuff and such. But still. I didnt like the idea. I guess if I had gone into a school with them it would have been different. But not having it and then having them well its like okay not for me. Its cool not my problem now.

I love the idea of school uniform. I'm sorry you don't agree. The people in this discussion that oppose uniforms may think I'm being old fashioned but I happen to think that student's safety is more important than free expression. There are too many child molestors and I have seen too many kids beat up for what they were wearing.

I work in a university and I have no problem with University students dressing the way they fancy. But in my oppinion, school uniforms for primary and secondary level schools should be a must. Uniform adds some identity to the school institution-it also inculcates a code of behavior, let alone discipline. In my country, uniform is a very serious requirement of any school worth its name.

I go to a public secondary school right now where we need to wear a uniform. It's just a simple golf shirt, but none the less a uniform. I don't think you should worry about what other kids are wearing. As long as your own is dressed appropriately. If you're really concerned then join a school council and bring the matter up with them. I don't think students need uniforms, they just need stricter bounderies on what to wear. Particularly for girls.. School staff just need to be less leniant and start sending people home, and suspending students for being out of appropriate dress code. Or keep clothes in the school incase they spot someone dressed inappropriately, then they can give them a shirt, or even a pair of pants to wear if that's the case. They'll think twice next time about wearing something like that again. Or, just let them get the "style" out of their system. Once they're done school itt's a whole new ballpark and they'll have the skimpy clothes style out of their system.
As far as elementary school students go.. I think if you put them in uniforms at a young age, you'll be warping their minds to think that it's like that everywhere in the world, even in the workplace; you'll need to wear uniforms in every life setting. And you want your children to be able to have freedom. They don't get much in elementary school and most of highschool, so don't ruin it for them by giving them uniforms.

Another thing I wanted to add, is what about people in families that can barely get by on what they have? School uniforms are no where near cheap, and some parents can't afford to be buying their children uniforms. And it won't really save money in the long run, because they're only in school for a quarter of their day..They'll still need clothes for when they get home, and weekends/holidays. Uniforms are pricey. It's not fair to students who can't afford them.

Wearing uniforms in elementary school does not warp kids minds. I have known many kids who had to wear uniforms and they turned out fine. As f or having their freedom taken away, that is far from the truth. kids have too much freedom. I have even had students tell me in this discussion that they think kids should wear uniforms.
As for parents not affording them, they have to buy them school clothes anyway? At least with buying uniforms there is no pressure to buy expensive desighner clothes which also takes the pressure off the parents

Yes they should have to wear school uniforms because it promotes equality and uniformity. I agree with what you said. It makes them look like a group for a purpose. I think uniforms are mostly very comfortable and look very cute on kids.

Uniforms do a lot more than just cover a kid up. They help keep the "haves" and the "have nots" from noticing the differences too much. They help keep kids from being wrongly identified as gang members. They present a crisp, clean and decent look to the children. I am all for uniforms in all schools.

AMEN!
However, even if there was a school uniform dress code (particularly for the teens), they'd still find ways to alter it. I went to a Catholic private school and in my high school year, the dress code was skirts were to be at the knees...or one inch. Some girls took that as 1 foot above the knees. My goodness! They must have been practicing for their future as pole dancers. That was mean of me...but that's what it looked like. Plus, I know how some men LOVE the whole "Catholic school girl uniform" look.

I don't think that was mean. I happen to agree with you. I have said worse.Alot of these girls look like they are about to turn trick with the way they dress and what is so sad, they don't see how dangerous that is with all these child molestors running around.

I agree. Of course, the trick would be to get the kids to see that it is okay to be part of a group. Using Japan as an example of a place which can boast unusual academic excellence in its young people, I can say that they live in a society which places more emphasis on group function than individual identity. The States have an extremely different value system, though, where dressing in the same way that everyone else dresses is something that many young people would consider shameful.

I know what you mean. Kids automatically think we adults are just being oppressive and don't stop to think that we just want what's best for them

I think in a lot of ways it would be a good idea, since there are problems with the way kids dress. In the schools in which I work we have a dress code. It's a huge list of things the kids can't wear, including spaghetti straps, midriff-baring tops, clothes that are too oversized, and anything even remotely gang-related. I think one problem with uniforms though is cost. In my district many parents would have difficulty affording the uniforms (yes, they would replace some of the clothing they buy for the kids now since they wouldn't need to buy as many pairs of jeans or whatever, but still). The district would have difficulty absorbing the cost itself, I think. It is kind of hard to enforce the dress code, though kids do end up having to change their clothes and get written up all the time. I wonder if as a "uniform" kids and staff could agree to something like nice jeans and a certain style top--like, everyone wears a button down white shirt or a nice T-shirt or sweater in the school colors or something.

There is a school close to where i used to live that adopted that kind of uniform.the guys were allowed to wear blue jeans or blue dress pants with either blue or while polo shirt or dress shirt. The girls were allowed to wear blue jeans, blue dress pants,or blue skirt no higher than one inch above the knee and white or blue polo type shirts or dress shirts. What I thought was really cool is that on Fridays, they allowed the kids to wear what they want but the dress code was strictly enforced.I wish all schools were that strict. They actually barred two girls from attending the prom becasue they showed up wearing extremely revealing gowns

I think they should have a school uniform, since we have to save electricity to wash clothes from day to day. And also if the student from school will wear uniform, the school will be recognize.

Unfortunately our local district implemented a uniform/dress code city wide. I say unfortunately because it's the furthest thing from "uniform" I've ever seen. When you think of a uniform code you think exactly what you pictured in your discussion topic. However, our school district implemented a dress code as such:
Collared Shirts, must have sleeves of some type in colors of each school
Skirts, plain, no print in colors of the school
Dress Pants/Khakis in school colors
Shorts, supposed to be 1 inch above the knee or longer in school colors during "warm months".
The issue at hand... some schools have allowed t-shirts in the school colors, no collar. Most say nothing when the skirts are up around the girls' necks and show it all. Most say nothing when the boys' pants are hanging down around their butt because "well it's the school colors".
It's ridiculous. They need to implement actual uniforms instead of generic listings of types and colors. Nobody looks the same, just has basically the same colors on. Even the colors vary so much that you could never tell they're "in uniform". Most schools have Khaki as the base color then add on their school colors (my twins school is red and black) along with white.
I would love to see TRUE uniforms implemented in public schools but only if they're going to truly force the issue.

I can see your point hockeygirl. It doesn't make sense to implement a uniform then have it so disrganized. That would have driven me nuts!Maybe some day they will get it right, lol!

All schools should have uniforms, it would make life easier for all. Around here, I have seen many with a docker type pants and then a polo shirt with the school colors.
This way, hem lengths are not a concern.

I would support the idea of school uniforms in all schools. They are there to learn and most of their clothing is distracting to say the least.

Polo shirts and khakis. That's the perfect school uniform, it's fine for either gender. I think it would make life easier for all students and their parents. I believe the Philadelpha public schools have a uniform-- I think it's great!

No, while it would eliviate some kids updressing others, it would probably put the same undo stress on the poorer families that may not be able to afford uniforms.

poorer families are going through stress buying clothes anyway. If the school came up with a uniform that consisted of everyday clothing,it would be much cheaper than buying a regular school uniform

I'm all for uniforms, IF they get input from the children and/or the parents. Although, sometimes it's not a good idea, because the COST of 2 uniforms can equal to the price of 10 outfits that can be switched around. If there are alot of families in the community who don't have the funds to get the uniforms, then it will not work. However, in Akron, Ohio they tried it in a few elementaries and it sort of worked because it was basic... white polo, dress shirt, or blouse with navy blue slacks, skorts, shorts, skirt or jumper dress which were comfortably sold at Wal-mart, Kmart, and Target. And that made it affordable for me, and also saved me some money. So if the dress code is simple like that, then it can work, but again, I feel it is important to get the children and parents input.

I agree with you whole heartedly. the kids definately should have some say in the ubiform and it should be of a type that can be bought cheaply and not put undo financial burdens on the family
