Is it necessary to lie to survive in today's world?

Yesterday I was explaining my kid a lesson in her school book. The moral goes on to tell one should.’t lie. Ok i would have said before reading it that we shouldnt need to lie, but well, it somewhat changed my mind, as there is a whole variable on the "size" of the lie. and i guess we all do it, although i would not go as far as to say i tell a lie for every three minutes my mouth is open lol! so its an interesting concept.. one i don’t like much, have to say, as i cannot stand being lied to, even on a minor scale. so it did make me wonder just how rife it is and to what extent people go on to lie mainly to save their skins.

With what the world is coming into now, yes I do think we all need to lie to survive. Though it would be much better if people wouldn’t lie but some circumstances just makes lying a necessity. But I'm not saying that just because it sometimes becomes a necessity that we shouldn’t do away with it. Lying is still lying and lying just makes us more untrustworthy so as much as we can, we should do less of it. However, it is within our primordial nature to save our own skins- to survive. Being humans, we are sort of compelled to do stuffs that are even subjectively “wrong” just for us to be able to get out of a tight situation. This is when some things- like lying come in handy. I personally also cannot stand being lied to and the most characteristic I really do value is honesty. So as much as I can… I don’t lie. Unfortunately, being that honest also does get me into a lot of trouble as well. So sometimes I'm left with no choice but to lie… I guess I don’t have that much integrity yet to stick to the truth. Nobody’s perfect you know….

agree. even with the best intentions, small untruths are bound to happen. ultimately, one can only ever be true to oneself.

Well this is an interesting subject to discuss. What can I say in which concern me, my mum said to me even I was a child that what she hates more is somebody to lie her..so that she teach us,if I can say so that everything that we do never lie her and I can say that I grown up thinking that this is the right way to be..But now being an adult I found up that sometimes if you don't want to hump anybody you can tell a little lie, or to hide the truth so that everybody be happy..I don't say that we should tell anytime lies..but sometimes is better to say a lie than the truth..I think it's better to educate our kids telling them that they shouldn't say lies and when they will be older thay can found up themselves when can lie and when can't..I hope that my answer will be useful for you.

To live in integrity is a wonderful spiritual virtue and part of purity. even with the best intentions, small untruths are going to happen. ultimately you can only ever be true to yourself.I think it's important to point out to our kids that there's a difference between intentional and unintentional lies.

I think that it has become fairly necessary in todays world to lie in order to survive. Actually its the tough competition which makes it necessary. In the office u have to lie to your boss to save the job and get promotions. Also in other fields you have to do so.

Nobody likes being lied to. But i guess its inevitable. Little white lies should be permissible - i do that too. But i guess whats more important is who you are lying to and the reason behind the lie. if it helps someone or causes no harm then its ok.

The important thing is, we are able to inculcate into the hearts and minds of our children the value of being truthful and honest. Once they grow up with it, they will learn its value in their lives. It will be life itself which will teach them that there are times when we have to tell a lie. Telling a lie becomes necessary when it is called for. Like, we have to cover the wrong a friend does so that he/she won't be expelled from the school. The wrong anyway is not that bad as to bring or cause anyone so much bad thing happening in their lives. We, parents, must always be able to come to our child's rescue when this happens. This will create some kind of confusion in them and clarifications coming from us will clear their conscience.

It is not neccesary to lie inorder to survive. It's a wrong belief. But it is not that lieing is a bad habbit. Some may live thier life with their lie.. In some cases we need to lie so that we will not be disturbed in our way...

i dont think so.. i think people can survive being straight and honest. people lie to get away with something, now if you are truthful and need not to cover your tracks there is no need to lie right?

Lie is necessary in this world. But it should be for a good reason. If we have to safeguard some important informations, we can say that we don't know. There is no bad in that, because if we say it to someone, he may say to somebody and the message will pass on thereby breaking the importance and secrecy of the information. There is no problem in lying for a good cause

l agree with you that it is wonderful to try not to hurt other people through deception and lies. the example and situation indeed calls for lying.

I do not think that you have to lie in order to survive in this world.i really do not like to be lied to,and i do not like to lie.Once you tell a lie,you have to tell another lie to cover that lie,and the lies just go on and on until you can just say that you are a liar.I do not think that would be a good way to live your live based on lies. The only reason people lie is to cover up what they have done.If you live your life (right) then you have no need to lie.If you do what you are suppose to do,like being honest, not doing the wrong things, and being right, then you have no need to lie.It is always better to be honest and tell the truth, and if you do lie because you have done something that you should NOT have done,I think you should be a big enough person to admit you told a lie.I refuse to lower my standards and go along with the group, that would be a compromise, and I will not do that to myself.Learn to live your life the right way,and you have no need to ever tell a lie...

muaaaahhhh slickcut. wonderfully said. The reason i started about having to lie for survival was merely reacting with some experience in my spiritual evolution, in which l came to know that the deepest lies and the greatest truths are a result of what you tell yourself for survival or you pretend to be just because it is too painful to face the truth. being human race we are all imperfect someway and no person is so perfect that they don't lie. l was just pointing out some ways in which we lie in order to add to a deeper introspective look at how we do evolve and become enlightened.

I believe its possible to avoid telling lies cos it hurts when people discover you lied to them no matter how small it may be. Rather than lie, its best to either put it plainly or apply some wisdom by been diplomatic about the issue (that is, not lieing and yet to revealing the truth)

Its just good to go honest on everything, even though most people say that a thousand white lies will be equal to a truth. Why bother to lie a thousand times, its too tiring .. .Cheers

Everyone lies at some point in their life. It's usually out of fear. Like one time, I was afraid to disappoint my dad, so I Lied. In other cases, it can be to protect someone, or even hurt someone. Honesty is great, but if your to honest, well, for example look at simon cowell, he's honest, and really rude. I think people should be as honest as possible, without hurting someone if they can avoid it.

I can not stand a lier and my kids know this very much, you will here them say to one another or to a friend my dad dosn't put up with liers. But on the other hand I do it every day at work without thinking about it. I do it because I am asked to my supervisor. wow you gave me a lot to think about.

It is necessary sometimes but it also all depends on the who, what, when, where and why's. If the lie is grave, then I don't think it's permissible anymore.

To lie in order to survive is not really my cup of tea. But having been through a lot of struggles in my life, I think I learn to lie not to hurt other people but to mask my own emotions and feelings. Sure, I don't want people to lie to me. But lying seems to be the only way where I can shield whatever is troubling me. :)

Ya it's true that to survive in today's world it is necessary to lie.People don't like listening what is true and what is correct instead they prefer hearing what they want.
