Explaination of my myLot Name

Ireland
March 29, 2007 10:15am CST
I just received a message from one of my friends asking me the meaning of my myLot name, so I decided to post the explaination. Tir_Na-nOg is an Irish name and it means The Land of Youth. There is a little story about Tir_Na_nOg and I will try to tell it as briefly as possible. The legend of Tir_Na_nOg is one that every Irish person is probably familiar with and many of us wish it was true. The quest of man for eternal youth has obsessed man through the ages, and legends such as Tir_Na_nOg inspire us to dream. It is and enchanted land closely linked to the story of Oisin, one of the great heroes and poets of ancient Ireland. Oisin was the son of Fionn Mac Cumhal and he became a member of Fionn's band of legendary heroes, the Fianna. One day while out hunting, a beautiful maiden approached him. Her name was Niamh of the Golden Hair. Niamh chose Oisin to be her lover and to live with her in Tir_Na_nOg. They travelled through many strange and wonderful lands on her magic white horse until they reached Tir_Na_nOg. They were married and lived a long and happy life together in this enchanted fairyland. Nobody grew old or sick there and Oisin spent 300 years there without looking or feeling a day older. However, he began to miss his people and his home terribly and wanted to return. Niamh understodd and she provided him with a fairy horse to take him there. She warned him that he must never set foot on mortal soil, if he did, he would never be able to return to Tir_Na_nOg. Oisin arrived back in Irealand to see that much had changed over 300 years. Fionn and his men had long since died and the Fianna were now legends. Oisin didn't like what he saw and he decided to return to Tir_Na_nOg. On his way back, he came across some men trying to lift a heavy rock and he bent down to help them. Tragedy struck when he slipped from the horse and fell to the ground. Oisin fell on mortal soil and was instantly transformed into a blind old man. He wanderd around Ireland for many years before St Partick took him into his house. Oisin told St Patrick everything about Fionn and the warriors of ancient Ireland and Tir_Na_nOg. He eventually died without ever setting eyes on Niamh and Tir_Na_nOg again. And so the story of Tir_Na_nOg ends with something that we all know well ny now. Eternal youth is for fairies and not for mortals - but that shouldn't stop us dreaming. Is there a story behind your chosen myLot name? If so, please share it.

Well, I have a book about the celtic music and there is a chapter devoted to the Pagan Irish culture with the explanation of the story of Tin Na Nog. I like Pagan culture and I enjoyed very much that book with Irish stories. Your myLot nick is very nice and "romantic".

What a lovely story. I am afraid I have nothing so exciting to add. I was just taking a look at the myLot site and I decided to register on the spur of the moment. The name I chose was the first name that came into my head, and I often wished I could change it. I guess there is no hope of this so it is with my for my duration here on myLot.

Well, it is a nice name and I like your avatar that goes with it. I suppose if you really wanted to change it, you could ask myLot about it. Thanks for your comment.

what a lovely story . I think Ireland is much like Scotland with folklore . My name is quite easy to see I think anyway , My 3 sons are all tall 2 over 6 feet and I am under 5 feet , so they always talk about me as the wee Mam so I thought that would be a cute user name , my friends often call me just "wee" i like that too xx

How interesting! It is a very nice name and very appropriate. I am over six feet tall and my wife is five feet two inches. My three children take after me as the boys are also over six feet tall and the girl is five feet six inches. Thanks for commenting.

Yes, it is a very sad story and I used to read these stories to my children when they were growing up. I chose the name because there are so many people from different countries here on myLot and I thought it would be nice to have an Irish name. Thanks for responding gabs and hugs to you too.

See how quickly birds of same feather (10 Starred ones) come together! Anyway, it is good to see so many of them at myLot and together. It gives us inspiration. Maybe, someday, we would also have 10 Stars. Keep smiling!

So nice tale it is. You have told the all and I believe nobody will again ask you the meaning hihih ... just kidding! What is behind my name. I would like to tell that I love son, the one and only! His name is Ali Asad that means Lion of God. I inspired by that name and adopted the name for my son. Being much affiliated, it becomes my user name over here too. Thanks for your discussion.

There was a film called Tir_Na_nOg, which was made a few years ago and I would recommend you to watch it. It was made in Ireland and some of it was filmed in a block of flats in Dublin. It is both funny and sad and I thought the part where the children took a horse in an elevator to the top story of a block of flats was just hilariously funny. It is a film really worth watching.

This is a nice long story, and one that I had forgotten. I have used the name I used to perform under, when I was a clown. My kids did some Christian clowning, and they had so much fun, I had to join. I lasted a little longer than they did. At some point I will either put "Gerty" on and pose for an avatar pic, or I will find an old photo of her. She is a clown in the spirit of a hobo, slightly scruffy, but cute, and down to earth.

Performing as a clown must have been very exciting and entertaining. I would love to see your picture whenever you decide to post it.

My mylot username is just the combination of my firstname and surname. My first name is Moumita, and surname is Mazumder. I write it together as moumitamazumder. That is the explaination of my mylot username.

Thank you for the story and explanation - it was sad but different to posts I have found here so far. It is nice to know the reasons for people's usernames. I joined eBay about first on the internet and just used my name then saw so many wonderfully exciting usernames that I wanted one. Mine here is based on my cocker spaniel pet. His posh name is Shenmore Sorceror so we call him Merlin. I think he is magical so call myself magicalmerlin. He is 12 now so it will also remind of him when he is no longer with us. i don't have enough posts yet to be able to add a photo of him here but there is one in my profile and I started a post about him with it on.

I just took a look at Merlin and he is adorable. I had a german shepherd for thirteen years and these are only supposed to have a life span of nine years so hopefully you will have Merlin with you for a good number of years to come. It was a great idea to pick a user name that was associated with him and thanks for sharing it with us.
