Should parents pay for their child to have a cell phone?

I know of many kids (around 9 or 10) who have cell phones. One child in particular, loses her phone just about every other month and her mom buys her the newest, coolest one at the time. Do you think parents should maybe make the child earn money to pay for his or her own cell phone if it is really something that the child wants (not needs) but wants.

I think that children need to be taught responsibility and respect. If your child wants something frivolous or expensive they need to earn the money, or help earn the money, to buy it. If you buy them something expensive for a gift and they don't respect it, i.e. lose it, break it, then they should be the ones to earn the money to replace it.

I think it is foolish to keep buying new phones. My 13 year old does not have a cell phone because I feel she's not quite responible enough. But I will say this if I got her one which I've given some thought to if If can't insure it she won't have it. Tell your friend to go to cellphoneshop.net and buy used good phones and all new ascessories dirt cheap.
