Do you like that Snape exists as a character?

Let's jump into the Harry Potter universe and forget, for a moment, the "Is Snape evil?" debate. Instead, let's talk about his usefulness as a character. Personally, I'm intensely grateful that Ms. Rowling gave us a character like this. He may not be someone who I would want to invite to tea (if I were British) but as a character he serves a number of purposes. He gives us foreshadowing of how dark the Dark wizards can get very early on, he functions as the voice of reason with Dumbledore on regular basis, and he's a nice break from the legions of *nice* people. While I like nice people, I also like breadth of emotion. And Snape gives us that in spades! My favorite characteristic of Snape is that he's the one character we can count on to not serve Harry's ego. All the rest (including Draco) make Harry feel better about himself (Draco, by losing to Harry at Quidditch). Snape does not. Snape calls him on it when he's being stupid or rash, Snape recognizes that in many ways he is a normal kid, and Snape takes no crap from him. I like Harry, usually, but that doesn't mean it isn't a relief to run into someone occasionally who *doesn't* like him! What do you think?

We can see him just as a normal man,a teacher.Don't expect that Snape can be a saint or a bad dark wizard. He just Snape. He has his own duty, maybe sometime he is forced to do the things he doesn't want to.

I agree that nobody has liked Snape, but I have liked that the way his character turned sides in the last book. It has made the last book very very interesting. I still think that he will in the end support Harry. IT would be really interesting to see a character like Snape in real life as well. He is very very mysterious to me.

My favorite character in the Harry Potter universe is Snape, because he is so complex. You can never tell what why his loyalties really lie, so you just have to trust that Dumbledore is correct in trusting Snape, although it seems that Snape proved him wrong by turning around and killing him. But JKR has done such a great job on the storytelling, and has always made a point of everything not being what it seems, and there are so many mysetious circumstances surrounding Snape, that I refuse to believe he is purely evil.

I don't really know if snape is a friend or an enemy..Snape is powerful and gifted wizard and possesses a ruthless cunning wit. Dumbledore the most powerful wizard of his time tells harry he trust snape. I like the character of snape what I dont is that why he kill dumbledore.. I hope that there will be a good expanation about this in book7.....

I personally love Snape's character. He is a good example of evil, but other than that, its more like he is the "breath of fresh air" in a world where everyone loves Harry Potter. I love the series but it is nice to find someone who doesn't want to always to kiss his butt. lol

Snape is a nessasary character. He is someone in the book, who is evil to an extent, and makes you think. Also you wonder what his next move will be. I use to like him, but his actions caused me to cry so, not anymore. I still like Draco though, He serves a really good purpose, I loved him in the 6th book. =)

harry got shabby treatment from his uncle and his son. he got shabby treatement from snape who wanted to take revenge on harrys father. Poor harry was at loss to know what was his fault.Other people think Harry has some great power which harry himself does not know. I really feel pity for that boy who had to fight all odds at a very young age when he should have been happylike other Kids. I dont like snape who is a blck guard.

I agree with you completely. I do think that he is a necessary character and he does show us another part of the world. He's very flawed and not nice at all but he's a very intriguing character. I don't think J.K. Rowling expected so many people to like him. I love characters like him where its hard to tell whether they are good or bad and you can just hope that they will be redeemed in the end.

I agree jean. Snape is like the only adult (besides known deatheaters) that doesn't like Harry. I think him frequently petty, but it makes him more human. It also interesting that almost everyone loved Harry's dad, but we can see that Lily also told him he was cruel by picking on Snape. Having never been in the in crowd in school, I can feel for Snape. I do feel that Snape picks on Harry more than Harry deserves, perhaps, because Harry really is basically a good kid. Personally I rooting for Nevil to be the one the prediction was about.

wow so many people who love Snape. Sometimes i thought i was always the type who falls for the wrong kind of person even in fiction!!!... But yes i love Snape b'cos his is the only character which is so complex everybody else is good or bad!! and yes whenever harry needs a telling Snape is the one doing it and most times very effectively. And as for being evil i dont think he is completely evil he is a true slytherin he just watches his back and then thinks of being brave n noble etc

I find that Snape is very important character, for me. Whether he is good or evil, wherever you stand on whether he's likable or not, he still plays a pivotol role in my opinion. He gives us a bit of darkness which isn't necessarily bad or evil. Even when he's good, he is dark. As his character develops, we get a glimpse of why he appears so dark and sullen. His dislike of Harry may be due to certain prejudices against his family in general, but we can see why, and (like you said) it is nice to see someone who doesn't put Harry on a pedestal. Even the other characters who dislike Harry in some fashion put him on a pedestal that they're desperately trying to knock him off of (not realizing ofcourse that they are the very ones who put him there to begin with). Not Snape though. Snape tells it like it is, and calls him like he sees him. In the first book, I especially enjoyed the role Snape played in showing us that the most obvious villian isn't always the villian we're looking for. His character in that book was a wonderful representation of the old, "you can't judge a book by it's cover." So, yeah, I love Snape's character. (And, I can't wait for book seven!)
