My son has an assignment due today we can't get ahold of his tutor or his math teacher. Can anyone here help him? If you know the answer if you would be so kind as to explain how to come up with it as there are 15 questions just like this one. Here is the question: Ann is now seven times as old as Joan. In six years, Ann will be five times as old as Joan. Find the present age of each one. Many thanks in advance to everyone who helps!!

Ann is currently 84 and Joan is currently 12. 12x7=84 in 6 years, Ann will be 90 and Joan will be 18. 90/18=5 hope that helps!

You must have done that by guess-and-check or in your head. That's pretty good. Good job on coming up with the right answer!

In order to answer this question properly, we would need to set up an algebraic equation, both sides being equal, in terms of Joan's age. So, we will set Joan's current age equal to "x". Therefore, Ann's current age is 7 times "x" Joan's current age = x Ann's current age = 7x In order for that side of the equation to equal Anne's future age, we need to add 6 years to Ann's current age. Ann's age in 6 years = 7x + 6 Now, we have enough information to make a balanced equation on the other side. So, we know that when Joan is 6 years older (x + 6), Ann will be 5 times older. Joan's age in 6 years = (x + 6) Anne's age in 6 years = 5(x + 6) We have found 2 equations for Anne's age in 6 years. Now, we have to set them equal to each other, and find what x equal to find Joan's current age. 7x + 6 = 5(x + 6) 7x + 6 = 5x + 30 7x = 5x + 24 2x = 24 x = 12 12 is Joan's current age. Anne's current age is 7 times that, which is 84. Hope that this was helpful, and that it gives an example of what to do for the other problems. Good luck!

Thank you to you also. It is good to know that more than one person agrees on the solution. I believe we have got them all worked out now. Whew! I just remembered why I didn't do well in math. LOL
