I watched a program tonight on Roots by Alex Haley. It got me thinking about my own roots. I know my family's background and I know it's been traced back quite a fair ways, nearly as far as the 12th century! Has anyone else been able to trace their family back further? Did it make a difference to you knowing where your roots started? I was quite surprised to learn where my family came from. I'm part Scottish (yayay), part Austrian, born in Canada (first generation) a real mix :)

I started searching my family tree, got to about 1850 for most of them. Then my daughter took over and became quite good at it, even teaches how to do it now. She's got us back to the fifteenth century, I think.
It really hasn't made a difference to me. It is a fun thing to do, like being a detective solving mysteries. There is still one family back there that I want to know more about, but haven't been able to find it yet. Maybe I'll get back into it someday. Since I retired I've been too busy!
Hey, are you still going camping? Be careful but have a good time.

I'd really like to know more about my family's history. The difficulty is that both sides - paternal and maternal - didn't tell stories or keep facts on our older generations. There's also been a few family skeletons that have been so hidden it's difficult to know where truth and fiction meet or don't meet.
My mother-in-law has done my husband's genealogy. She was able to do it as a hobby before I married my husband. Unfortunately she is working 2 jobs and taking care of my father-in-law who's had some health problems. Doesn't leaver her much time to help me. Plus they live quite a distance away.
It wouldn't really make a difference in my life if I knew my geneology, but it would be nice to be able to pass this information down to my children and to satisfy my curiostity.
