Do you think it's possible to start withdrawing troops from Iraq and still help maintain some sort of order and development in the country? This is a popular discussion in my community, as I am a military wife and all our friends have either been to Iraq or are there now.
It's an interesting question reall, more like a catch 22. If you bring the troops home too early, you possibly run the risk of the country falling apart. However, one could say the country is already falling apart and why not just bring our men and woman home safely? I know a few troops deployed currently, who are fed up with everything and are just tired and ready to come home. My husband suffered greatly in the war, working very long days and being in great danger. He believed in what he was doing, but I know first hand how being over there can stress out a human and a family. I do have respect for humankind and don't want to see the Iraqis people suffer. I would very much like to see them florish and grow. But I also want my friends home, too. See, bad catch 22.

Well, it is really a catch 22. As you know many people were opposed to the USA going into Iraq but now that they are there the question is what would happen if the troops pull out. On the other hand there seems to be civil war going on anyway so you could argue let the Iraqis sort it out themselves. My heart goes out to all the fine and beautiful young men and women who put their lives on the line every day, who often have young families at home who also suffer the anguish and worry every day and pray their loved one over there is o.k. Then I see the daily violence and the attacks on the US soldiers and I say these people don't want them, they don't agree with our ideas of freedom and democracy so why is the US sacrificing their own people to bring something to this country that people don't want. Or maybe most Iraqis are grateful but for some reason the forces opposed to freedom and democracy are too strong. I think as the opposition to the war grows and grows in your country the troops will be withdrawn whether or not Iraq is ready. That will also be sad, I too feel for the children and innocent people that are blown up each day. I sincerely hope your friends are safe over there and your husband is recovering speedily from the stress he suffered.

Thank you for your thoughts about my husband and all our friends. It's a very rough time. I do know for a fact that the news often doesn't show all the good that goes on in the country, which is sad that they focus mostly on all the bad. I have heard many wonderful stories about people waving and cheering our troops and being thankful they were there. It's easy to say withdrawing troops will make a difference, but that just seems too easy. I don't know if many people realize just how difficult that might end up being.
