"Honey, they're cheese sticks."

I have a new quote for "My hubby's words of wisdom".
Today I was looking at the nutrition information on these cheese sticks at the grocery store. I love cheese sticks, and I really wanted them, but I have to be careful about sodium. Well, the bag said 230mg right, so I thought that was pretty good considering it was cheese, junk food, and something frozen.
When I got ready to prepare some of said cheese sticks tonight, my husband was just going to bed in the other room. What I said out loud was "Ah man it says 2 cheese sticks is a serving"... and then I heard from the other room "Honey, they're cheese sticks". *laughs*
So do you bother reading the labels on food that is obviously bad for you? If so, are you unrealistic about the serving sizes?

*laughs* Both very good points, cyntrow! =p
I agree with you that pleasure is important. I've just been trying very hard on this diet, not a weight-loss type diet, but once because of a health problem that I have. So it's kind of a big deal to me to at least make a real attempt at it. Still, I ate six cheese sticks, serving sizes and sodium content be darned! lol

yeah I do! once I hit 30 I became more conscious of what I eat and dump into my body! HAving said that you are lucky it was 2 cheese stcks , it disheartens me everytime I eat white bread 2 slices 170 calories and this is just the bread Wah, wah ( tears running down my cheeks ) , what about the egg and the OJ (orange juice) that goes with it! the whole damn thing takes my breakfast to different level, it is a sin to eat so well! having said that I can not let go of white bread at all... and know what till I do not get sick enough to die I am not going to switch to Brown bread, I hate the taste of it so much so that I would rather go without breakfast than eat brown bread.
To answer the second part I am not unrealstic about serving sizes, I know those fried thingies have a lot more going in them than we think and that holds true for frozen items too. Even the healthy frozen foods have unnatural amount of sodium and sugar in them. So I never try to eat store bought food , I make my own food all the time (ofcourse there are exception but they are a very few) so that I know what I am eating most of the time. :)

Bread is one of the big things that gets me too. I find myself eating one piece of toast, and that's just crazy! *sighs*
I wish I could make all my food myself. I just don't have the know-how, and I can never seem to find the time. I work full-time and have a young child, so I can hardly find time for anything most days.

I don't pay much attention to the serving size. You know that a bag of chips will tell you that a serving size is about 8 chips. Who is going to eat eight chips? Come on now! I don't know who makes up the serving size for food products. It must be what a rat would eat. lol. After all rats are used to determine every thing else. Also who determines what is junk food. Cheese is essential. It provides you with your dairy that used of been the base of the food pyramid. And it also is high in calcium and vitamin d. Unless you are on a specific diet eat what you want not what the lable says is the serving size.

Thanks for your response!
You make some very good points here. These serving sizes are obviously not realistic for human beings, and rats are an obvious possibility!
That's a good point about the benefits of cheese. The only reason I really worry about it is that I'm supposed to be eating a specific diet for a health problem that I have.

You know lecanis I do pay attention to labels and serving sizes but I often turn a blind eye if its something I want. I try and balance my diet, and not over do anything, but there are just some pleasures that we deserve. My biggest concern is cholesterol as I am a dairy freak, ice cream, real whole fat cream, cheese, whole milk, and if I could drink it straight from the cow I would. But even as it concerns, I scoop three "servings" of ice cream into a bowl, I use five times the amount of real cream over fresh berries that is called for as a single serving. I just do not do it on a daily basis.

*laughs* I've been known to pretend to misread things if I really want them. "Oh, that's what it says! I thought it said the box was a serving!"
I try not to do such things on a daily basis either. I'm actually doing pretty good, but today I just couldn't resist. =P

I really don't put any kind of importance on the serving size. If I'm hungry I eat, if I'm not then I don't. That being said I may not be the best person to respond to this topic because I'm not overly fond of eating. It's something I have to do, not something that I want to do in most cases. The trick for me is finding something that even sounds good. So if high calories are involved, that is probably a good thing.

Wow, that's interesting. I haven't known many people that don't really enjoy eating! At first it sounds nice, but when you think about it, that's a big pleasure for me that I wouldn't have. Not only that, but you probably have problems getting enough food to stay healthy.
Thanks for responding!

I love those things too, even though I am not a big cheese fan. I noticed that also. A serving is only 2 sticks. So if I have them, I eat 3 sticks. But I rarely eat them anymore. It wouldn't be difficult to eat 6 or 7 or more and hardly notice all the fat and stuff filling your body. That is the problem with a lot of junk foods, as a serving size is meant for a mouse. Eat a regular human serving size and you get tons of calories, fat, suger, salt and who knows what else. I hope you do a twinkie study next...lol

When it comes to something like that, especially if I'm craving it, I don't really care how bad it is. I know it's not good, but it's the only thing that will take care of the craving. Sometimes I am just curious how big they consider a serving. Usually small enough to make the numbers look better. LOL!

Our daughter is food-induced hyperactive so yes, we read the labels all the time for content of ingredients. My husband is trying to lose weight so we read the labels but for different information. Foods that are bad for us have a hard time coming into the house at all. But every so often, something does come in and we splurge.

I usually do check the serving size-- especially if the info sounds too good to be true! I have made it my mission to NOT buy anything that lists "partially hydrogenated oil" on the label. It's hard-- but it makes me mad that they put that artery clogging crap in almost every snack food!

Well... I can see your hubby's point, and it did give me a bit of a laugh. It sortof reminds me of the people who go into Mickey Donald's and order a couple of Big Macs, supersized fries... and a DIET coke.
I understand your good intentions, I really DO... but if you feel like eating a bit of junky snack food, eat with PRIDE, not with GUILT!
And yes, I CAN appreciate reading ALL labels if you have certain dietary restrictions, like sodium, cholesterol, etc.
And who the heck eats TWO cheese sticks, anyway????? :-D

Pleasure is most certainly important, but at what cost? I'm a smoker who has just quit smoking completely (It's been about a week now) and I can tell you that this very excuse, of respecting pleasure is what keeps my friends still hooked to the cancer-stick. Self regulation is the key and you ought to know how much you can indulge yourself before you are actually harming yourself. Make no mistake, eating junk food is no minor indulgence. It can lead to severe health related problems, including heart trouble, if left unchecked. You may have heard about Adnan Sami, a very talented singer and keyboard artist from Pakistan (You can check youtube for his many hit music scores). He was a normal healthy dude with regular eating habits till his relationship ran into some trouble and he started pigging out on junk food. Before long, his weight had touched an astounding 206 kilograms!!! He has since been on a fitness regime and brought his weight down to 96 kilograms and intends to lose more. Now unless you want to compete with him in the near future, watch what you eat, with care.

I think I kind of know in advance if it is going to be bad for me and just go with it. I don't mind treating myself now and again and am happy to accept the consequences.
I do have a line of course, say, i wouldn't ignore the risk of cigerettes, but a couple of cheese sticks? I would be happy to eat them and my neighbour's portion, as well.

Haha yeah, I know what you mean! It always seems like serving sizes are really small, and they never really fill me up very much. I still always read the labels, but it never sounds quite as bad until you realize what a small portion it really is! By the way, I love cheese sticks too!! I can eat so many of those things! lol

I guess serving size could be important, but not to me if it's something I really want! I'd rather enjoy as much as I can then eat like a bird! A lot of the times I look at serving sizes, it's just for a laugh!

I read them but don't always "believe" them, lol. How can you eat just 2 cheesesticks ? I would eat four or five dipped in sauce. The store bought ones aren't bad but Arby's cheesesticks are the best!
