Usually like that, barking dog seldom to bite, the dog just warning the enemy. But in dangerous situation every animal must be protected itself, in this case maybe the barking dog will be bite if there is other animal or human attack him/her. But for other fighter dogs, they sometimes do not starting with bark, so they can attack the enemy if they feel dangerous without warning, so maybe because of this people always said that quiet dog is more dangerous than barking dog.

I dont know how well the saying is real but there are some genre of dogs who do not bark much but attacks the enemy with a silent anger. But there are dogs who are fearful and dangerous and they bark a lot. I would say that one should always be aware of dogs no matter whether they are of barking kind or not.

I've a feeling that someone believing this is likely to get bitten. However I think what it may be referring to is that usually - but not always - a dog will growl first as a warning and only if the warning is not heeded will the dog bite. Plus a dog that is barking can't be biting at the same time so it could just mean that.

I've never heard that expression - i've only ever heard - His Bark is Worse than his Bite, being that he'll use his barking to intimidate but he's not really a biter. I have had barkers who bit, i've had barkers that didn't. I've currently got a dog that barks, growls & bites if provoked (a shih-tzu we got from a shelter - we're pretty sure he was abused as a pup). However, he's generally a very loving dog. I think everyone needs to know that they need to take caution around ANY dog coz there's always a chance, it's in their instincts!

I know this is a famous line.I do believe that barking dogs usually don't bite BUT there is always a possibility...just because they bark doesn't mean they won't ever bite...There are dogs who are very quite, suddenly react and bite on the hands or face etc...and there are dogs who bark, chase people and bite them :)

in my experience, I have to agree. I have a very big, very silly, but very loud labrador, called Nero who barks at everything and every body. however, he has never yet bitten anyone except me when we role around on the floor playing blessed be

I don't have a dog (my apartment complex doesn't allow them) - but I am proof that the old saying "barking dogs don't bite" ISN'T true. Here's why - some years ago a friend of mine had a Great Dane - it was always barking and my friend told me if he's barking, he's not gonna bite. Like a fool, I believed him. I STILL have a 1/2" scar on my forearm where the dog was barking (and acting normally otherwise) and reached over and grabbed me! Lucky for me it wasn't any more serious - this dog weighed over 125 pounds! So that old saying is a MYTH - barking dogs DO bite. -_^

My cocker spaniel barks at newcomers but I think he is welcoming them. He barks a lot when my husband comes home (or even just back downstairs after going upstairs sometimes!) and most when my mum visits. I think he is so excited to see them. He also barks a bit when people come to the door which must frighten them but he rushes straight past whilst I am apologising. I have tried to stop him but he does not bark for long and he is 12 now so it is a bit late to get him to stop.
