Does anyone here have any advice on what steps to take after writing a first draft of a book? Has anyone had any luck getting their own books published or doing the self-publishing? I have additional books in mind to follow the first book, but have no idea what to do now!

Hi! I have not publihed any of my books but i have worked in getting books published. The first thing you do with your rough draft is find someone with similar interest to read the book and critique it, also someone who can proof read the book to eliminate any errors.
Once this process is completed, according to the subject of your book identify publishers who deal with the subject and send them a synopsis of your book along with your resume. If they like your synopsis, you can further go ahead with negotiation for the book to be published.
If you are a new writer, you might not get very good royality, but working with a good publisher adds to your profile.
The cover of the book is also very important.
Hope this helps

Put your draft away for a little while. In the meantime, start a new project and/or begin researching publishers and agents. Read the guidelines carefully regarding their methods of submission and the types of manuscripts they're looking for. Then you prepare a book proposal and query letter. Some publishers and agents only want a query letter, so don't anger them by sending your entire manuscript.
Pick up your draft after you've let it sit for a while, so you're looking at it with fresh eyes. Note any areas where you could improve, or any areas that need revision. If you have an objective reader(s), let someone else read it and give you feedback. When you feel your manuscript is ready, you can send it to those agents and publishers who've requested to see it. Hope this helps! I wish you the best.

You can look for publishers on The Writers Market. They'll have a copy in the reference section of your local library. They also have a website. Probably www.writersmarket.com but I'm not sure. It costs to join the website, but it's updated daily whereas the book is an annual.
Research publishers for the kind of book you're writing. Follow everyone else's advice here. Rewrite, proofread, etc.
If you don't get a publisher, you can self-publish on www.lulu.com. That's what I do. All the info you need is on their site. Good luck with it.

You might want to join the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators.

Here is a list of Children's Publishers.
